Half a dipstick?
I recently acquired a 1969 GTO with a 400/350 YS motor. When I got the car it had half a dipstick! I don't know where the bottom went but you could not check the oil level. So I bought a repop and inserted it in the motor.
There was piece of tape on the fan shroud that said 6 qts with filter...I am not sure why it was there as its no surprise; the shop manual says 6 qts with filter. So I put in 6 qts and before even starting the car the oil level read under the "Add" line....wtf? Until I start the car it should actually read over full until the oil filter fills up. Wait, it gets better... So I start the car for the first time with the new dipstick and ran it for a short while and then I shut down to change points, rotor, etc...I started it a second time and its making a rattling type of noise on pass side...I peek over and the dipstick has popped up out of the tube and is rattling because its being contacted by the rotating assembly! W-T-F! So, I just put the old half dipstick back in the tube, oil pressure is fine, but what is going on here? |
Sounds like someone forgot to put the other (lower) part of the dipstick tube in when your motor was built.

that's what happened all right. I've seen crank throws snap the bottom third of dip stick off because the piece that taps into the oil pan and lower crank skirt isn't there.

And the reason that it did not read properly on the full dipstick is that its not guided directly down into the oil? Can the lower tube be installed if you remove the pan while in the car? |
Pulling the oil pan while in the car is a huge PITA, I did this once (albeit on a chev a-body) and it is way easier to pull the motor. The oil pump interferes with removal of the pan and then you'd have to be sure all the main seals were on right upon re-installation. Not sure if you'd have access to the hole in the block as it seems like this would be right over the crossmember. (you can see the hole on the bottom below the #3 main cap)
