QUIET electric fans?
 

So here is my dilema... My car came with an aluminum rad with twin electric fans (see pic). The setup pulls a TON of air, and no cooling issues whatsoever. The problem is that the fan noise is VERY annoying. Unlike a mechanical fan, this is a loud "whirring" noise, which you can hear coming down the street long before you see the car! Of course it is even more noticeable since I replaced my noisy headers with RAM AIR exhaust manifolds.

Searching through Summit, the 12" 1,000 cfm flex-a-lite fans were advertised as "very quiet". I ordered two of them at $80 each, and tested a fan outside of the car. Well, they are almost as loud as my old fans, and dont pull as much air (but still probably plenty).

I have an 18" clutch fan I am thinking of switching to, but will need to fit a shroud, etc. However, I do like the function of the electric fans, just not the irritating noise!

Has anyone used electric fans they would consider as quiet??

I have a Ford Taurus fan on my 67 Firebird project car.
Fits nice and easy to mount.

I have not. Since I have the relays and everything wired up, should be easy enough to add any electric fan. What year of Tauras fan are you using? I assume they come with a built-in shroud?

Also, wanted to ask about noise... any thoughts on the noise levels of the Lincoln or Taurus fans? I would think 1 large fan would have to make less noise than my 2 smaller fans that sound like they are running 10,000 rpms!

1988 to 1995 Taurus and not much louder than my engine when idling.
Think it is the shape of the blades that make them quiet.

The Derale single RAD fans are 'ultra-quiet', and I have used them in the past, they are dead silient. The 12" fans are two speed, you can hook them in parallel, and run off a controller made for 2 fans or dual speed fans. Just an fyi, the quiet ones are usually rated lower in CFM than others, but if you can get away with total 2900 CFM (true CFM) then you will be fine.

Thanks for the notes... I ordered up the Taurus fan on ebay, and will give that a try first.

I run the Lincoln on my 71 fb and it's not heard above the engine noise fwiw.

i run a 12" and 14" S bladed fans
they move a lot of air and i've never had a cooling issue before
there are also controllers out there that will power primary fan on first, then secondary
as well as limit power so they turn slower, using less power
may want to check them out

one fan i have is a derale fan which i think is the 12" one and the other is a Zirgo one
supposed to be some high mega power fan, but honestly didnt notice a difference from the previous fan

i also run a flowkooler pump and 170 balanced sleeved T-stat

Spal "S" blade fans are pretty quiet as well. And they move a decent amount of air. The straight blades move a little bit more, but are noisy like the ones you have now. Whatever you finally decide on, make it an "S" blade design.:2cents:
