Barn find 1972 GTO

My turn at the barn find lottery.
1972 GTO - yes true 334 GTO option.
Left in a barn for 22 years.
Under 44,00 original miles.
65 Sundance Orange w/black Cordova top.
400 4 speed, original engine/trans. 12 bolt 3.42 posi (Old mobile). Wide Oval tires that look NEW.
Interior in good shape, a few surface rust areas around vinyl top trim. Needs new headliner, spent a few hours cleaning the interior and vacuuming out the mouse nests - yuck.
Pics to follow.

Great find. Congrats.

So, what's the story behind how you found it and went on to own it? Newspaper ad, word of mouth, driving by and saw it, etc? Usually there's a cool story when someone finds one that's been sitting for that long...

Cerberus 05-30-2013 05:14 PM

The back story of the find:
One owner, last on the road in 1991. Owner dies in 2012. Car had been sitting in a pole barn in upper Michigan. Pontiac built car, sold in Flint. Probably spent it's entire life in upper Michigan. Car was bought from the estate at the sale in late 2012. The guy who bought it found it was covered in bird crap and mice were living inside. The front wheels were off, brakes disassembled, carb was off. The guy I purchased it from got it put back together and running. Was going to keep it, but had a Jeep project he needed money for, so put it on Craigslisp. I had a trip planned to check out some parts - decided to check the area for other parts in the area. Found the add on Firday morning. Called Friday afternoon. Made the trip to see it Saturday - eight hour drive one way. The guy didn't have the title yet, as it was in probate court as the original owners
wife died before she could sign it over. Others had called on it, but wouldn't make the drive to see it unitl he had the title.....
Anyway, got there Saturday afternoon. Placed a small downpayment and signed a purchase agreement to wire the rest when he had the title in hand. He had the title on Monday. Paid up and placed the shipment up for bid on Uship. By Friday of last week, had the shipment booked for $600. Car arrived at the house Sunday morning.
There are a few minor issues. Leaks in radiator, valve cover gasket, rear seal.
Transmission (M20) pops out of 4th when you decelerate or fart. Paint bubbles in the usual places around the top trim. Interior has holes in headliner from mice. Seats in great shape. Dash has no cracks. The wide Ovals are bias ply originals that are in very, verry good shape.

Hey Cerberus,

My son and I saw your new GTO on the hauler in Zeeland, MI last Saturday evening parked in a church parking lot. We were on our way back home (GR) from a soccer tournament a mile or so away and drove by on our way into town for pizza about 7 pm. That was you right? I had seen the picture you posted of the car in another thread and when we saw it, I knew I had seen it before. Did you buy that in Michigan?

It looks sweet and a great find.

Dennis

The hauler was from Zeeland, so yes it was the one you saw. It's the first muscle car I've had that looks betterr the more your clean off the grime. I have yet to have that "oh shiite" moment when you find the defect that makes you question the purchase.

Not quite - just north of Traverse City. Westbayshore Drive.

I should have refrained from using "upper" (yooper) in my description of the area. Near the tip of the middle finger would be more accurate...........
