Your HANS Device
 

Getting a little older and hopefully wiser. After all this time racing, I thought I'd purchase a HANS Device. It's tough enough to get in and out of the car and now putting this thing on. It appears I may have to relocate the mounts of my seat belts. Perhaps even purchase a set with separate shoulder belts. Currently my shoulder belts mount directly behind my seat from a "V" style single mounting tab. They seem nearly too short as the tensioner buckles ride in the guides of the HANS Device. Then there is hooking up the slider to your helmet.....

What have you done with your belts? How much work is it for you to put everything on? It will take an outside person to help me get everything hooked up. Once that's done, you pray nothing delays the race as it also gets mighty warm with the required jacket and everything else.

Maybe you could even post some pics of you all bolted in.

It looks like I'll be needing a steering wheel that is removable to get in and out of the car easier. After spending over $600 for the device, I'll figure out something...:(

I've been using a much cheaper (and non-certified) version I bought several years ago. It's a simple T-shaped piece that fits under my shoulder belts and attaches to the helmet. It seemed like it would be some help and it was much cheaper than a certified device, but I'm thinking of upgrading to a real HANS device now that I'm adding a blower and the prices of the HANS devices have come down a little. I would also be interested in anyone else's experience with them. I'm hoping whatever I get can be used with my current helmet.

The HANS device will work with your old helmet. It comes with the hardware you need as well as measurements you might need to drill the holes in your helmet should it not already have them. I just purchased a new Bell helmet and it had the holes drilled already. You just remove the rubber plugs and install the hardware provided.

The hard part is getting everything in place in a reasonable period of time. You will need to practice putting it all on to determine the easiest order to put on helmet, HANS device, seatbelts and window nets. If you have a funny car style roll cage, it becomes even more of a challenge to put everything in place.

I will tell you, I feel much safer with all of the safety equipment in place. It's a bit claustrophobic at first however.

I'm required to use one. My belts go straight through the seat to the cross bar. I actually put my Balaclava, Hans and helmet on once I'm in the car.

Get the quick release installed on your helmet. It makes life a lot easier.

I use the Dfender device. I dont know how well it works and have no intention on ever finding out either... :) I purchased it instead of the HANS product due to fit and versatility.

I used a HANS in the Grocery Getter with no fit problems. I would put on my jacket, head sock and HANS outside, get in the car and then put my helmet on when it was time to go. I could hook the tethers up myself, in the car.

The HANS would not work in the funny car. The part that sticks up in the back would get caught on the cage. I switched to the Safety Solutions R3 Pro Rage and it works great since it is much smaller than the HANS. I have to put it all on outside the car, due to the tight confines of the f/c cage.

The HANS came with a video that shows sled tests with and without a HANS. Viewing that definitely drives home why a head restraint should be used, regardless of which one if chosen. Having your brain torn loose from your neck is a particularly gruesome way to end your existence here; and it doesn't take a lot of speed to have it happen.

I just started using one... I have been able to leave the hans and helmet hooked together and put on as one piece...it took a few times but seemed to be the easiest way to get belted in...as for getting out in a hurry, I have not practiced that yet!! I did get the sliding tethers...

I have to get out in 10 seconds or less from a running car, we get checked randomly as we pull off track, usually after a practice or Q. After a long hot 45 minute race we'd be pretty ill with them to check us just for that.
It's more of a sequence than speed. Hit kill switch, pull the wheel, release belts, open door, drop net, grab the roll bar and slide out with helmet and hans attached. Even after a race I find it's easier to get out with it on rather than taking it off in the car, so I always do the same sequence to stay in practice.

I use one in the GTO - I put it on in the car after my helmet is on, I acually slide it on from the front and then spin it around back. I have also found that the quick release tethers are way easier for me to get hooked up and un hooked. In an emergency It goes out the door with me head first, ask me how I know lol . And if you get one get the sliding tether.
