68 El Camino conversion to GTO - should I do it?
 

Has anyone tried to do this? I saw an article a year or two ago about a 65 that was done. I wonder how the fenders would fit?

Thoughts?

Yeah, do it.You'll be doing the world two favors: One more "GTO" on the road and one less Elky. BTW, I'm in White Bear, so I'll expect to see it next year at Car Craft.

I'd check fender fit. I know on a newer ElCamino, (71), they didn't take standard Chevelle fenders, the ElCamino, and Chevelle wagon were different from a 2 door.

Might have to use a Lemans wagon fender. :) Maybe even the door and weld the Elcamino door frame to the Lemans door.

There is no difference between wagon/El Camino fenders and Chevelle fenders. None of the GM A-body cars had specific fender stampings within their brand, the only difference would have been trim holes and nothing more. There were some minor differences (one example were GTO-only fenders for 1970), but those differences did not keep them from bolting onto any A-body shell from that particular GM division.

The Pontiac fenders won't have the correct outer contours to line up with the El Camino doors, but they should bolt up to the cab. Using Pontiac door skins and rear quarter skins skillfully grafted on should get you the right look.

The wagon/Elcamino fenders are not the same as a Chevelle from 70-72.The 68/69 fenders are all the same.

Never would have guessed that they would have made a specific fender for wagons and El Camino bodies, my bad.

The difference was that the wagon and el camino fenders were flat to match the slab sided look of the existing body shell from 68 and 69. They did not have the muscle bulges like the chevelle in 70-72.

I agree, the wagon/ElCamino fenders from 70-72 have more of a curve on the side, than the 2 door fenders. I wasn't sure if Pontiac was the same.

El Camino / wagon doors & fenders were different, other years too. Fenders have been repoed so you can look that up easily.

If you like the look as I do go for it.

the headlight bezels on the wagons/elcaminos are different also

It gets my vote, IF, and ONLY IF, it has a Pontiac motor. That will be just a little bit of revenge for all the old goats and birds that have been disgraced by replacing their Pontiac motor with a Chevy motor.

I could almost swear that someone posted a photo of an '68/'69 el Camino with a '68 GTO front clip a month or two ago. Wherever I saw it, it looked great.

Actually a Le Mans ( or is it an El Mans) but you get the idea. I used to have scans from a magazine article, but no more.
Having owned a couple of Elky's, I always wanted to do this myself. I always figured wagon parts would be the way to go for door skins.

I saw one about a week ago in Hockessin, DE. Might be the same one in the photos posted earlier. It was light yellow with a black roof. It was following a black Chevelle SS vert. I was just crossing thru an intersection and it was on the cross street so I couldn't get up close. Looked nice.

I've seen this 442 Camino a few times at shows here in Texas, very nicely done car!
