Dual Gate Auto Shifter Cable Rubber

I am putting my 68 GTO Auto back together after a long restoration. I need to know how the shift cable rubber boot attaches to the floor pan. There are two holes in the rubber boot that I suspect bolts to the floor. Is there a metal retainer that fits on top of it first or is the rubber just bolted to the floor?

Thanks, Bob

Not quite sure what part you are referring to. The grommet for the cable on my car just pushes into a hole in the floor like in the diagram below. Hope this helps.

Yes the grommet just pushes in the hole in the trans tunnel hump. The hole is 1 1/2 inches. Use PY number:
RPU243 1964-72 SPEEDOMETER GROMMET..............................$8.00

GM Parts Catalog dated June of 1978 shows it as GROMMET, Shift Cable to Floor,
Group No. 9.775,
Part number: 3786368
GM also uses that same part number for the 68 Tempest/Lemans/GTO speedo cable as well as for other years.
The 2 inch description in the catalog is for the overall dimension of the Grommet and not the actual hole size.
T/8 =Tempest 8 cyl, and A.T.=Auto Trans

The original grommet is a round one that fits in to the whole like described above. The replacement cable you can buy these days has the type grommet you described on it so that it can go with multiple applications.
I just changed my shifter cable a few weeks ago and tossed the grommet that came on the new cable in the garbage. My old grommet was still in real good shape, so I re-used it. If yours is missing or in bad shape, go with the speedo grommet mentioned above.
