67 hood scoop
 

I am looking to find out if the grille part of a 67 gto scoop is painted black or the color of the car, thanks

I believe that they were painted flat black. They just don't look right when they're body color unless of course the car is black.

I believe they were body color. We "test painted" mine black and painted red around it, looked weird IMO

Hmm, looking at pictures most do appear black although I see some are painted body color

Those are body color because whoever painted the car either didn't know or were too lazy to do it right.

I used to think that they were body color until Old Goat 67 set me straight. He's owned his since new. Mine were always 2nd hand at best. A couple of months ago, I found the scoop off of an original paint Copper Blaze '66 I had nearly 30 years ago, and sure enough, it was flat black in the grilles.

Charles is right on the money.... they were flat black from the factory.

There's a couple of guys around here with a 65 and a 67 that have them body color. One is white and the other is green, and both look like crap. GTO guys, me included, have mentioned this to them but they got their heads so far up their butts the won't listen. They think we're the ones that are wrong. LOL

This is definitely good to know. I'm hoping to acquire a second scoop so I can open it up, this should eliminate painting it black :D

Better yet it lets more air in. ;) But also bugs and water and dirt and..... LOL ;)

True, but I'm not too concerned, maybe I can fab up a mechanical, or vacuum flapper lol

The inserts were black. 30 years ago I was lucky enough to buy 2 NOS replacement scoops. These service parts were red primer with the grille portion painted flat black. The flat black portion was then masked off by the manufacturer. So just like I'm sure they did at the factory, after you painted the rest of it body color all you had to do was remove the masking tape.

Spud, I've opened up a couple of them by running a cut-off wheel along the back side of the grille areas. It removes the material but leaves the fins. It's easy to do and fast. Plus, it looks really good when done. No need to try to cut between the fins....simply removing the back material in a couple of passes allows the fins to stand alone. It'll keep the bigger bugs out, anyway!

Spud, no time soon. Got a busy two weeks ahead of me and no time. I have a couple of photos of it on the other PC and will try to locate/post them when I can.

I've been running a wide open scoop for 7 years on my '66. No bugs have gotten in there (Florida). I could just be lucky? If you wanted to get fancy, you could open it up and attach a screen on the back and paint that black.

Thing is, it's easier and faster just to run the cut-off wheel behind the scoop insets. It leaves perfect grilles in place. Looks factory, and no screen to install. Easier than neatly cutting out the entire opening, IMO, and looks trick, too.

Doing the same for two years on mine. No bugs also. Could it be that it's really just "Cold Air Intake" and not "Ram Air"? Ha. :)
