Remote Mirror interior handle to door panel installation?

I'm finally putting my GTO back together, and I have a question around the installation of the interior remote mirror.

I have the interior adjuster going through the door panel clip, which then has a chrome trim piece that screws on to the adjuster.

However, that install is very flimsy, as it appears there is nothing behind the adjuster to keep it from coming through the door panel. As I screw the chrome trim on from inside, it just pulls the adjuster through the panel.

Is there another piece, or did I put the door panel retainer on backwards?

There is a metal plate attached to the back side of the door panel the bezel screws into.
Here is a photo of my GT-37 door panel with the metal piece on the back side.:)

Right. 72 GTO panels.

So on the 68, it's totally different I think. There is no plate on the back, as the bezel on the front threads into the remote adjuster.

Does anyone have a 68/69 mirror I can see?

There is a plate on the back with the 69, done mine not long back.
