Fan choices
I have a 67 FB 400, 4 speed, with A.I.R. What type of fan was on the car? Fixed or clutch? Number of blades?
|
Mine has a flex-fan with five blades of stainless, 17" diameter as I remember.
|
Anyone, anyone, Bueller...
Come on guys, what fan cam on the 400's? |
ttt
|
Not sure about A.I.R., but 400-4spd used a 5 blade w/clutch. 19" dia., 2-5/16 pitch.
Next time i'm home(work'n 2 jobs), will check old Pontiac parts catalog for A.I.R. |
Forgot, all fans where 19" from factory.

This may help: http://thefirstgensite.com/library/fans/fgffans.htm

That chart has at least one mistake. The 69 manual trans with A/C uses the 5 blade power flex fan instead of the 7 blade clutch fan. I think that the same is true for 68 but I'm not positive.

73 Pontiac parts catalog list.
Sorting through mess(way past do) for an earlier version think had a detailed chart. Forgot to write down part #'s(was 3am after 2nd job), so get'm next nite or 2. May not help anyway cause GM liked to change #'s every so often. Clutch; V8 with A/C exc A.I.R stamped PH V8 with A/C and A.I.R stamped PG Fans(all have 2-5/16" pitch); V8 exc A/C-A.I.R.-HD(4 blade-19") 326 A.I.R. exc A/C(4 blade-19") V8 HD exc A/C(5 blade-19") Ram Air(4 blade-19") |
I have determined that I had a clutch fan. Any idea if the fan itself is the same for fixed versus clutch?

The party putting the tech info together is using a later edition parts book where part numbers have been superseded. Can't repeat enough times, quality info on correct parts used comes from disassembling & documenting actual cars, not leafing through (often later dated) master parts books. |

The assembly manual, dated 2/18/70 shows the 480033 and 480036 fans to be used optionally/interchangeably, though I've yet to see a 480036 fan.

The '67 to early '70 usage 5 blade flex fan was speaking of earlier is a 9791346 / "346" for short. Have several mid to late '68 dated versions. Have also pulled quite a few more off '69 models & 70 models & the trend I've noticed is they typically predate '69 Pontiac A-bodys by 4 to 10 months. From what I've examined on original cars, they have not been not tight dated like alternators. |
I've noticed that date spread as well. We've covered these on other threads, but I'll mention that the 480033s were configured with either 4 or 3 rivets per blade. The early ones appear to use the 4 rivets.

My car is 3rd week of June 67', 400, 4-speed, with A.I.R. What fan and clutch part numbers do I need to make this thing correct?

Here is my 346 dated J67. I think J is Sept. or should be since I was not used.
|
So that is a fixed fan and would have the aluminum "stand" behind it? Mine would not have been like that correct? I can't believe this is so difficult to find out this information.
|
Correct, the clutch fan is completely different from what I've seen. I've heard about 7 and 5 blade but have not had to research them to know the difference.
