On Its Way for Body and Paint

Took the GTO to a shop for body and paint work. While it is gone for a few months, I will be cleaning and refurbing all the parts that are reuseable. I made a list of everything I need to buy yet and it gave me indigestion. It's going to take me a year probably. On the upside, I already have a new Legendary interior in the garage attic and in the basement.

Just started taking stuff off this week for paint. Mine is 65 coupe. Any suggestions? What was hardest part to disassemble? What color is the car now and are you going with the same color?
Just curious.

There isn't anything that stands out as being tremendously difficult. Glass and vent window assemblies a little tricky - the new gaskets I put in them while they were out of the car were a pain and I don't really like the looks. I had to get the first set replaced as the passenger side just wasn't right. Second set was useable but I don't like them.
Bag and label everything including the screws or bolts that held it on. I restore the stainless, brackets, bolts etc. while the car is in the shop. The car is Fontaine blue an it was painted once in 1987. Definitely looks better in the photos than in reality. It is going to remain its original Fontaine blue. My body guy is making progress and still says he will have it done before Christmas . He works full time for a local collision shop and is doing my car nights and weekends. He has his own home shop but will take the car over to the collision shop when it is ready to be sprayed so he can use the booth. Nice boss huh?

Sent you a pm. This is my LeMans clone. The clear coat is peeling in a few places so I'm getting it re painted Nightwatch. Hope the pictures attach. I have put Rally 1's on after this picture was taken.

Your car looks really good. Actually, I plan on buying some 14X7 steelies and poverty caps for my car as I love the look. Mine had Rally II's on it when I bought it. The tires and wheels on the car are just paint shop rollers so tires and wheels don't get overspray and dust all over them.

Adam is making progress. Did a first prime a couple of days ago. Will block, prime again, block, seal and paint. I had him replace the driver's side front floor pan and the pass. rear as they both had some tiny perforations. Bottom of windshield was the worst spot on the car as it must have held water. The rear window channel was perfect. The rear bumper had a date of 10/17/87 written on the inside. I think that is when the car was painted and freshened up. I am pretty sure that the rear window panel must have been replaced at that time as it was too good to be true on a 48 year old A body. Anyways, a good solid car with only minor metal work other than the windshield channel. Said he is going to work on the inner fenders while he lets the primer sit for a couple more days.

Looks great. Mine needs to go for paint as well. Bluemist Slate with Blue interior is my factory color combo.

Thanks. Can't wait for him to get some color on it. Probably another few weeks. Yours will be a nice color combo.

Took mine to body/paint last Sat. You are a few weeks ahead.
Found out yesterday I'll need a short piece of sheet metal. It's the weatherstrip channel above the tail panel on passenger side. Got any leads on where or who has a donor car to get this piece???

If you mean the piece that goes between the trunk lid and back widow (has the "gutter" that the bottom of the rear window sits in), our host has them # rpr150. if you need something running up the sides, I am not aware of any repro pieces. Perhaps someone else does.

Looking Good!!! You gonna be riding b4 Spring!

rsavage 01-15-2014 07:38 AM

Don't know if I'll be able to get it all back together for this summer. It would be nice to be able to do so though. Once the good weather hits there are a million other jobs and things that seem to get in the way of steady work on the cars.

Looking good!
