New Topic - AUTOGRAPHS WHOSE DO YOU HAVE
As the title suggests whose autograph(s) do you own personally? I will start off with a few that actually were passed down to me by my Dad after he passed away.
My Dad grew up during the depression and from age 7 until he graduated from high school went to Girard College in Philadelphia a school for fatherless or for poor people. (His brother who was few years older also went there) What he would do was to write politicians and movie stars requesting a autograph from them. Most would honor his request with a black and white photographed signed. In some cases it was signed personally to my Dad Salem Kirban. I have two old albums that have his collection of autographs in them. I had a few framed that I recognize. Most are politicians I never heard of. However those in the movie industry some have proved to be very well known. For example I have one from Betty Davis, Helen Hayes, Linda Danelle (who was I think was voted most beautiful woman in the mid 1940s). I also have Walt Disney, Cecil Demille, and Frank Capra. Frank Capra was the producer or director of the Christmas movie Its a wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. Back then autographs were basically free unlike many that you would get today. Those are just some of the ones I have.... What do you have? I have a mini hockey stick autographed by several NY Islanders from the mid 1980's. Brian Trottier and Pat Lafontaine are the 2 most notable - both Hall of Famers now. I also have an index card with Mario Lemieux's autograph. I chased him down in the parking lot after a game one night in the late 80's. The card was all I had on me.
My niece stood in line for hours to get an autographed Miranda Cosgrove (from the Nickelodeon show iCarly) CD. She gave it to my oldest daughter. |

...I do have Arnie Beswicks autograph on the title of a truck I bought from him...Bill Maverick, Linda Vaughn signed a couple of my cars, Richard Petty, Shirley Muldowney, Big Willie, Roger Lindamood, Henry Winkler(Fonz), Butch Patrick(Munsters), Doc Watson(Hurst Shifty Doctor) signed a couple of my cars, Bob Riggle, Ronnie Sox, Don Garlits, a couple of Playboy Centerfolds, Jimmy Addison(Silver Bullit)...Fred Gwinn(Herman Munster), Paul LeMat, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, all from American Graffiti, one of the actors from "Christine", Bruce Litton(drag racer), Mr. Norm, Dean Jeffries, Gene Winfield, met George Barris at the Playboy Mansion and have his autograph too, both "big daddy" Ed Roth and his son Cody's autographs...Little Ricky(I Love Lucy), Goober from Andy Griffith, met many of the stars from Andy Griffith at Mayberry Days in our town, including Elinor Donahue(Miss Ellie)...guess there are more than I thought, needed to make a list ...quite a few pro basket ball players from 20 years ago, don't remember or care much who they are...not a sports fan, they were famous then...one was Shaquille ...not sure if I have any rock stars, but a couple of the Beach Boys used one of my Judges for a TV commercial ...all I can think of at the moment |
I used to have topps football cards autographed by Doug Buffone of the Bears, Wayne Walker of the Lions, and Chester Marcol of the Packers. Circa 1970-72. Aquired them in person when I was 11-13 years old.
I found a vinyl album at a flea market with the cover signed by John Denver. It was made out to a roadie, thanking him "for all the help last summer". Kinda wish I'd hung on to that. My most prized (and only) autographs I have now are a couple of real nice framed promotional photos of Morgan Shepherd. One with the Quaker State Buick (1987) and one with the Valvoline Pontiac (1988). I didn't know it at the time I got them that he is borderline illiterate, and rarely ever signs his last name. |

I've never understood the American infatuation with collecting autographs.
Don't have any, would never ask for one.....just don't get it. I guess its one of the those cross cultural things that doesn't translate well..... |

My dad was not into team sports, never played and didn't know much about them. But thru HS he ran track in NYC, was a pretty fair 100 yd dash man. He ran in some NYC program, either for a park district thing or for a HS coach, I'm not sure. The guy who headed it up was retiring, apparently had been there forever (my dad would have run in the mid to late 1940's) and ran all the sports programs and was one of those guys who was widely adored by the kids who were mentored by him. Wish I knew his name but I don't. My dad went to the retirement gala and Cousy was also there. I still remember my dad coming home, giving me the card and laughing about how silly he felt asking for Cousy's autograph but figured I might like to have it because I was a big sports fan. I knew who Cousy was but he really wasn't one of my heroes. But I'm a pack rat, so I've kept it. But not because it was signed by Cousy, rather that it reminds me of my dad. Only autograph I have. But I do understand the obsession. Some people collect old cars, some are fascinated by Barbie dolls, or music boxes, or stamps. Autographs are no different. If you are fascinated by them, you collect them. Simple as that. |
Never collected them but one of the first major concerts I ever went to in the early 70's was Leon Russell promoting his Carney and Leon Live albums, I was around 13-14 years old I'd guess so it really stuck with me. He played for almost 3 hours.
A few years ago he came to town and played a small 100 seat venue, I sat in the front and took my Leon Live and Carney albums, he signed both after the show. |

Never got into autographs but my Mother did as a young girl.....whoooa, you should see her collection. She's 82 and still has it.
She spent her youth and young teen years writing to "movie stars" and the majority sent her some publicity items like a pic or brochure, autographed and maybe some message. |
I have never been a big autograph hound. I think the American fascination with them is that for a moment in time, that famous person had their attention on you. Same as having a picture taken with a famous person. I would almost rather have the picture..
I would never stand in a long line or pay for an autograph, not my idea of a good time. Over the years I have collected a few with Reggie Jackson being the most notable. |

Couldn't get one from Dennis Kirban. He wasn't in the mood. ;) LOL But I will get one. LeighP, it's proof you have met and hopefully had a chance to talk with the person you got the autograph from. Sometimes their autographs fetch some good money. Not that I'd ever sell mine, but someday some will be valuable and will be passed on to someone. |
