Help on two items '70 Firebirds
 

Hey Guys.. I think I know this answer but thought I would bounce it off the board to confirm. Here are my two questions:
1.70 FB's only had a single rear shelf speaker on the drivers side,correct?
I believe the full size spare tire interfered with a passengers side speaker

2. The space save spare option shows up on the PHS??

Helping a guy on a IV restore and someone changed the jack location to a space saver location. I think it was done for clearance to install dual speakers?? His PHS does not show the space saver spare option..

Been a while since I messed with this end of a 70 but my memory tells me I'm right that the space saver would show up on PHS and that full size spare cars only had a single rear speaker,if any rear speakers??

Yes, single rear speaker in '70.

Space saver spare shows up on a base Firebird's PHS (and a Formula's), but it won't show on a Trans Am's PHS. Since the standard spare on a T/A was a JW w/ F60 RWL tire, which was an "expensive" wheel and tire, the space saver was a no cost choice. So it won't be on the invoice, only on the build sheet.

As I recall, 79 was the first year that a second rear speaker was available from GM to fill the other hole in the rear deck....

Yes Craig.. getting old and lazy. as said, been a while since I dealt with this part of a 70, I had the answers in my files, just was too lazy to sift through it all. Ended up looking through everything and confirmed what I thought and everyone here agreed. I did find the space saver option on the 1970 options order sheet that comes with a PHS file. But yes, I am getting old, hell we all are quite quickly..:)

You guys may like this story.. Why I needed to confirm this is I am helping a guy who is restoring a RAIV. The trunk was/is a mystery. The mount for the spare jack has been torched off from its original large spare location leaving just the pieces spot welded to the trunk floor. But, a correct space saver spare Jack mounts were mig welded in ,in the correct orientation, on top of the remnants of the spot welded mounts. The loop where the hook that holds the tire is in the same position for full size or spare,just turned 90 degrees. Pictures look absolutely as if it has been there for ever.The spatter paint covers both the remaining spot welded parts as well as the mig welded mounts. Looks like Fischer made a change in line on this car.

Seems to me......:old:...I've run across that before........maybe not ALL but a lot of the early 70's cars got a similar hack job done on the S/S tiremounts.

I'm guessing the body assembly plant upstairs either missed some or had NO optional mount set up for production and cars were modified further down the line...

I would bet that was a factory "oops". When they realized it had the wrong tie down bracket, it went to the repair bay and got "fixed" before it left the plant.

I've seen that before as well. Also appears to have been done on a 69 I have.

Had a '73 Formula with the same exact issue
