reproduction tach
 

I see there are two aftermarket dash tachs being offered. The one for the 64 and the on the one for the 65-67. The 64 tach would be year correct for my car but the sweep looks so small. The one for the 65-67 say it has a bluish face to it not black so I would guess it would be a close color match to the 64 and have a nice needle sweep.

Anyone have experience with either of these?

I recently purchased the RP1799 tach which our host lists as 64-67. I do not think it correct for the 64 but it matches my 65 OK

If it has good electronics and fits in the clock/ tach spot properly then I say go for it.

Would have been nice if they had added a "silver button" (on the needle) so that it matched the other dash dials somewhat.

I ran a 65 dash in my 64 for a while (until a 65 guy offered me good money for it).

'64 tach was criticized for the small sweep but only way to go if you want factory correct.

Personally, if I was deviating from '64 correct, I'd use the '65 Rally Gauges (with its own specific tach).

My '64 did not get the tach or clock option. I bought an original '64 tach years ago with plans to use it.

But when I owned my first '64 back in the '70s, I kept dragging home Rally Clocks from the salvage yard hoping to find one that worked. Never did and somehow lost the ones I collected. But always thought the Rally Clock was plain cool to look at.

I still think the Pontiac Rally Clock is really cool looking and if you can bear not having a tach, or willing to go with a period correct Sun tach mounted on the column (considered a better tach arrangement than any factory option in-dash tach), the Rally Clock is a pretty good looking option to fill the RH pod.

Just another choice to consider.

Yeah I already have the rally clock, but could use a new lens. At one time I considered getting one of those quartz conversions off ebay for it. I do like the clock but I really like a tach in the car more.

Also that $399 for the 65 rally gauge is a bit steep for me right now. I did consider that at one time but I have a set of redone 64 gauges at home.

I sent my bezel in to get re-chromed and painted. I have it back but have not opened the box yet. I also have a brand new 65 fuel gauge and just ordered the 90 ohm sending unit for it.

'64 tachometers are very cool looking in my opinion. I wonder how the most recent reproductions are. They look great...

I had a reproduction in my '64. The lighting on the unit was very poor which made it just about unreadable at night (lots of glare). I switched to an original unit and I'm much happier with it.

Was it the new Parts Place one? It claims to be way better, but I wonder if anyone has tried it.

There are at least 2 if not 3 different versions of a repo 64 GTO accessory tachometer out there.


There was an older repo where the entire tach (including the housing) was made out of molded black plastic. I am inclined to think that this tach (according to the post above) was the one he was commenting on; and is basically un-readable once the sun goes down. (See the first 2 photos below). I would advise people out there to stay away from that version unless all you are planing is mainly drive during the daytime.

I will personally vouch for the latest & brand new repo tach from The Parts Place (made out of clear plastic, steel and aluminum) the same as the original GM unit. In my opinion the new parts place tach is 99% identical to an original 1964 GTO/Lemans tach and lights up perfectly at night. (The last photo shows the new all-metal Parts Place '64 GTO Tachometer.)

You are correct, Pete. I had the plastic repro unit and it was worthless at night.

I finally opened the reproduction tach from the parts place. I will post a pic up soon. It doesn't look like the one you posted as far as the back connections go.

There is two terminals in the back one has a + symbol next to it. Is there a reproduction wire harness for this? Is it just one end to ground and the other to the + of the coil?

If using that bezal on a 64 the underneath of the top is suppose to match the heater control color .

Dang, that tach looks very nice. I need to go ahead and buy one. I have an original, but it has a crack in the lense and supposedly makes noises when hooked up...

X2 I always hesitated on the Parts Place tach because it looked too dark and like they were using a sticker for the graphic under the needle. But that one looks nice!

I'm a bit concerned about the needle being peged at 7K. I have never been impressed with anything from the parts place. Hope this tach changes that opinion.

I also see there is a tach harness. I will get that soon.

I have the repo molded plastic, when I switch the ignition to on the needle jumps to 300, that can't be right. Anyone else experience this?

One note will not work with TI ignition as TI has 1 extra terminal .

rohrt, I know this is an older thread. Just wondering how much it cost to have Vacuum Ornametal is re-plate/paint your gauge bezel? Also, do you remember approximate turn around time?
