66 GTO Headlights

Do the 3 prong (low beams) bulbs go on the bottom or the top...been too long, can't remember how they were when I took them off.

saltman 1965 02-28-2014 08:47 PM

Top.

Satyr1966 03-01-2014 10:53 AM

Top is right. I can't believe how many times I've seen restored or repaired cars with the low beams on the bottom if they're stacked or on the inside of side by side setups. Jerry.

Didn't know that, good info. Thanks!!

Old Goat 67 03-01-2014 12:58 PM

I agree. You can tell when they are like that that whoever did the restoration is clueless!

Here ya go.

I bought a T3 (just one) at a swap meet last week. I couldn't remember what it was high or low beam. Seriously, how often do we change headlights in these cars.

I was just asking myself the same question. For me. hardly ever on my DD and never on my old cars.

Just make sure the tangs on the headlight are long and standout further, or the stock plug connector won't work. I had that problem with a set of Sylvania halogens. Wagner's are ok.

I have just run into this problem with the length of the tangs on the high beams. (Sylvania Xtra vision) I didn't have this problem with the low beams.
The attached picture shows how much longer the tangs are on the T3's (left) are than the Sylvanias. (right)
The tangs don't engage the female portion of the connector....
Any ideas on how to fix this without cutting up my original plug connector?

arbys 03-22-2014 04:12 PM

Someone should come up with a coupler.

Allright I came up with a workable solution without cutting into my original harness.
In my mind the new Sylvania bulb would be the "at fault" issue.
Thus that is where my modifications would reside.
I already had newer Sylvania low beams and I wanted the high beams to match. I did not note this issue with the low beam bulbs.

Caveat: There are many talented folks on here who may come up with a much more eloquent solution.

That being said I noted there are holes in the bulb tangs. (similar to the holes I have seen in 110v male plug connectors) I then thought I might be able to use these male prongs from a replacement 110v male plug found at the local hardware store. I then cut the (bent) wire connecting ends off of the male prongs and enlarged the thru holes on both sets of prongs to 1/8". I then used a 1/8" pop rivet to join the tang and the newly fabricated tang extensions. The pictures are worth 1000 words of explanation.

Wagner bulbs will work without having to make any alterations.

GT182 03-22-2014 10:15 PM

I have a set of GE H5001s that also work. No alterations needed on the tangs.

I bought a set of these and the fit and finish is excellent.

These are all true comments and good to know. :)

I wanted all 4 of my headlights to match. I already had fairly new Sylvanias in the low beams (didn't have this issue) and I had already opened the boxes for the high beams that I had to order from the store. (thus couldn't take back) I didn't want to buy another set of 4 of another brand just for the sake of matching.

Hopefully your comments/suggestion keep someone from getting into the situation I was in.

However if they do have this problem, maybe they can do something similar to what I did to get out of it.
