67 GTO Alternator
 

I dropped my alternator off to be rewound and try to get more amperage out of it. Is there an internally regulated aftermarket alternator that produces 90-100 amps that will fit correctly in my car. I'm not looking for a chrome one. The guy said mine was putting out 60amps although he said its a 37 amp alternator. I will call him Monday morning and he will tell me what he can do with it. He mentioned an external regulator that is attached to the outside of the alternator. He can do it internally but in a one wire, but I've heard negative things about one wire alternators. He said the external regulator mounts on the back of the alternator but will that cause any problems as far as being to close to the motor to fit?
Any ideas would help before he does this thing.

My opinion is by the time a 'conversion' is done on a non-internal alt for more output, get a OEM 12SI.

Making a lower output, older alt produce more one needs to change the rotor, stator, etc. You create more internal heat than the design was made for, you don't get sumthin' for nuthin'....may get more output at high RPM, than the low RPM output suffers......

The 12SI 94 A is designed to output the current, handle the heat, etc. Internally reg, It drops in too.

That's my take....if you like your alt you can keep it...........

My real only concern is that it fits with no issue and pulleys all line up correctly.

The 12SI and the 10DN that you have are for the most part externaly the same. There are adapters made to change them out. May need to change a pulley and/or re-clock the power post.

I did this on my Bird. Was buying a new engine and forward lamp harness anyway so had M&H build it for a interally reg alt and a HEI. Works great. I still use the stock brackets.

So you had this one built to be internally regulated? Is there something different when using an HEI that something needs to be done to alternator? I'm going to be using an HEI also.

No no no... the 12SI alternators were used in all cars after 72 or 73. You just get one from the junk yard or Autozone. You can find the converstion adapter on line or buy a whole harness. Of course the adapter is much cheaper.

The HEI has nothing to do with it. Just saying I did both changes at the same time.

I ment to say the 10SI is interchangable. I'm not sure on the 12SI. someone else will have to jump in on that.

Oh ok, I was a little confused there for a minute. I actually found a sits that gives all kinds of info on these alternators. The place I dropped it at might have one there already. I will ask him about it as it seems like the right way to go. I appreciate the information.

According to that site the 12SI is compatible also, the cooling fan just doesn't look the same.

The 12Si is a very good choice, not expensive and reddily available and easy to connect as well as a perfect fit. If you want to keep your style with the external regulator and wiring, I have one that is 105 amps that will fit and connect the same as what you have now. If you are interested in it let me know.
