P/S mounting????? Help
 

Need advise.

Trying to sort out p/s pump installation on my 63 convertible.
The pump bracket and pulley are the issue. I know from the manual the rear bracket is correct. The pulley, bracket and or the pump assembly is incorrect. Just not sure which.

I have a complete PS setup, but won't be able to get to it for several weeks. I am interested in how you handle the slave cylinder and the part that goes on the tie rod? John

I've already gone thru the control valve. Rebuilt a few for early Impalas with good success. The ball stud and seat were tight. Picked up a rebuild kit from NAPA for the seals and boot (cheap price) reused the clamp and trim the boot to fit. Just need to pick up a dust cap after it's adjusted.

Does your car have a dealer installed A/C package?

The way you have the alternator is only the way that the cars with A/C were positioned.

Something about your PS pump does not look right to me, I don't think that is the right pulley for a Tempest.

BEWARE: the first time to get everything plumbed and fire the engine (since you had the control valve all apart) there is a high tendency for the power steering to simply "take off" in one direction or another. If it does that and you have your arms or hands anywhere near or around the steering wheel, the force generated can break a finger. After you start the engine you need to "center" the valve with that nut under the dust cap. After you do that, everything will be fine.

Yes this is A/C equipped (factory or dealer installed not sure how to tell the difference).
I definitely have the wrong pump and bracket. Mine is most likely from a mid to late 60's Pontiac.
I'm very aware of the dangers of setting a control valve. I experienced that about 20 years ago. My arm was sore for weeks after that I learned to remove the slave cylinder rod from the mount during initial set up then reattach the rod for final adjustment if needed.

I was not sure if you knew about that, there is a high amount of pressure inside of that ram and I know if you have the valve apart it "looses" it's center.

Chevrolet used a similar P/S set-up on their early FS cars and 60s corvettes well into the later years. Let me know if you need any more photos of engine compartment.
