HELP!Need info on what side of 4-speed speedo cable goes in for 69 GTO
 

My muncie 4-speed tranny in my 1969 GTO ram air III has the speedometer cable going in the drivers side of the tranny and the one I bought for my 69 GTO has the speedometer cable going in the passenger side.What is correct.Dont know if the tranny in my car has been changed before I got my GTO or if its the original one.The guy I got the rebuilt tranny says they go in the passenger side.Also can I get my speedo cable to work or if I get another longer one can I get it to work.Please let me know on this>Any help would be much appreciated.Thanks

The factory service manual I believe told me that the 4 speed and the toploader 3 speed in 1969 were passenger side speedometer cables and the 3 speed Saginaw was driver side. I know my toploader is a passenger side.

3.55 and lower drivers side, 3.90 and 4.33 passenger side

Hey Ben,can you tell me where they route your cable for passenger side?Does it go in front of tranny when it crosses over from speedometer or does it crossover behind tranny?

Hey KO.thats really wierd they would change location based on rear axle ratios.Mine is a 3:55 drivers side but want to go to 3:90 gear since I installed ram air IV heads,intake and cam.Do you have any idea how they routed the speedo cable for passenger side?Thanks everone for your replies

my 69 judge with numbers matching 4 speed with 3.55 in the rear,also original had a drivers side speedo.Tom

My car originally had a 3.90 gear, and there is a small bracket/cage nut at the bottom of the firewall, and there is a little clip that bolts here to hold the cable in place. (I am assuming this is the correct procedure, you may want to verify.) My trans is also pass side speedo cable.

I can take pics of what I think is the correct part.

Since you are apparently going for correctness, I believe you will also need a reducer to get the speedo to read correctly. I have my original if you need one.

I have a clip also but it directs the cable straight back and then cable loops over to tranny on drivers side.Does yours clip direct cable straight back also and if so does it loop in front of tranny or behind tranny or does your clip direct cable sideways over to tranny right away and cable goes accross tranny in front of tranny and then loop back to rear speedo fitting on tranny?As far as reducer are you talking about a different speedo gear in tranny?I had them install a 3:55 speedo gear in new tranny for now since I have a 3:55 gear but eventually I want to change to 3:90 gear so wont change it for a while.Thanks for you reply and info

cars with 3.90 and 4.33 gears had a small 90 degree ratio adapter connected to a short cable that goes under the transmission and connects the the main speedometer cable, there wouldn't be any room on the drivers side to accommodate the adapter

Does this adapter fasten on tranny or speedometer or in between the 2 cables because I only have a one piece cable?I know they used to have 2 cables and now the replacements are a one piece design.thanks

the adapter screws on the side of the transmission with a normal speedo connection, the short cable then screws on to the adapter and then that connects to the main cable. the main cable would be the same regardless of rear axle.

So,could I just use one long cable I have thats 80 inches long and screw it into adapter instead of using 2 cables or is the short cable different on the end that screws into the adapter?Thanks for your help

Don't have the gears anymore (I do have a HD pinion yoke if you will need that) but let me clean that adapter up and send you a pic.

No,I meant the speedometer gear that goes in the tranny for 3:90 rear gear,not the ring and pinion for rear axle.Sorry

This is a good I was getting ready to put my cable back in the car this week.
It would be great if you could put the pic on this for everyone to see. I would like more info on this matter for myself. My iv judge built in April at Pontiac has 67155 miles on the car and it looks like the cable was never out of the car until I took it out. The motor and trans was replaced in 73 so I cannot say for sure that someone didn't change it out so I need to know what is correct for my car as well, because my car had one cable not two. I would like if more people with iv cars would post on this matter.
