215 or 225 tires?
 

Looking for some input - I'm running 215/70-14 tires on stock 6" steel rims on my 67 GTO. I'm finally taking the plunge and buying Diamondback redlines. Question is do I stay with the 215's or jump to 225/70. I've seen where the 215 is a more direct replacement with the original F70 specs but that the 225 looks better. My concern with the 225 is would it look like its "ballooning" on a 6" rim. Any thoughts?? Thanks.

As long as its a 70 series tire, on a 14" wheel? No to the balooning question. I had that same size tire on 14" wheels on my blue 66 in the front.

I'm running The Firestone Firehawk 225 14 diamondback radial on a 14x6 for the last 8 years, and it is fine. Also running the same tire on a 14x7 rim and a 14x5 rim on other cars. There may be ballooning on the car with 14x5, but ride quality is great.

Look at the pics and see if you can tell which car is 14x5, 14x6, and 14x7.

I've got Firestone 215/14s on Cragar 14x7 rims and they look ok, don't rub, and fill the wheel well pretty good. I'd rather have 15s up front with 225 or 235 BFG T/As so there's a bit more contact with the road. Narrow tires up front, with 255/15 tires in the rear, make me a little nervous on wet roads. Besides, the same size rim all the way around looks better than having them mixed. All 15s or all 14s. Easier on the drive train too when you have all one diameter rim when you have a flat.



And yes, I do drive my GTO in the rain. It was made to get wet. ;) LOL

I've run 225/70/14's on 6" Rally I rims since the late '80's. No ballooning, and no issues. I will say that they ride a bit rougher than the 215 does. They look much better on the car, though.

Those tire are still around $200 each right?

When I got them it was less than $800 for 4 including shipping, so yes, they have probably gone up in price.

Honestly, Love all the cars Andre. The Tiger Gold car is spectacular. Ive never seen them before.
