adam woodmancy 06-13-2014 07:12 PM

Very nice, I'll try to find it. Thanks for the tip :)

johnta1 06-13-2014 07:56 PM

Cool!

Have to go get it.

:)

Aaron Quinton 06-13-2014 08:32 PM

Well done Chad. I'll have a look. Thanks for the heads up.

GTO Dan 06-14-2014 08:43 AM

Nice! I will go seek it out. Collectors item too because regrettably I think this may be the last issue of PHR.

Loved it.

:)

Especially the 'one stipulation, it had to be a Pontiac'!

:)

That's a Pontiac faithful.

Awesome result, but it was the first Pontiac he ever built..
Heads were the first Pontiac heads worked by Chad.
We have yet to see a Pontiac only builder have a result like this in EM.
Funny how it is so..

When you specialize in an area, are you not supposed to be better?

Tom Vaught 06-14-2014 07:31 PM

Jim Valeko ported "2nd Run" E-Heads (for Marty Palbykin and I) that had better head flow than anything that Pete McCarthy and the "experts" at the time were doing in "our world".

Agree, sometimes it takes a fresh look "from the outside" to make a real change in the efficiency of the head for a Pontiac.

I would say that B Cerelli fits that Valeko mode also as he did mostly "The Other Guys stuff" until he started doing Bob and Franks Tiger Heads. Cerelli's stuff works.

That is an interesting question.

At least the customer had the fortitude to keep it Pontiac and not go with the usual chevy/ford junk.

Part of the success is probably 'thinking outside the box' especially the way Danny Miller and crew did with his entry.
(they took an out-dated combo and everyone told them it wouldn't do good)

Chad is an excellent head porter and possibly with some knowledge now from the previous year, it will really fly.
Plus the builder will have more experience with the Pontiac engine.

:)

I can't speak for the short block end of things, but from a cylinder head standpoint some just have less shortcomings than the next. In other words, I didn't know it was a Pontiac.

Well wait a minute! Yes I did because that exhaust port is the craziest thing I've ever saw! LOL

Congrats on the ink guys. Nice job on the motor as well.

In that years rules the Pontiac PP looked good, almost illegal if I recall.
Not taking anything away from them cuz it was a killer effort.

I heard whispers of people talking **** it was illegal. Same guys that rolled their heads and such. The only thing that might have deemed it illegal was if we had to run a intake spacer. However, Edelbrock built it into the head.

It was a over the counter offered casting just like the pro port LS heads and such.

Wait till they see the 23 degree headed there! Trust me on that. :D

nice work to all involved. I wish you guys would have considered a v head combo tho.

Did you modify the Ron's Toilet throttle body for EFI or did you buy it with a TPS and IAC from Ron's? I don't see it listed on their website for use with EFI.

johnta1 06-16-2014 07:51 AM

EFI Toilet on SpeedTalk

:)

LOL. It's so funny when I read things like this. Yes, all engines do have their idiosyncrasies, but the basic theory is the same. I've been building Buick engines for almost 30 years yet I am not known as a "Buick" engine builder. I have always read that to really do a Buick right you have to be a "Buick" builder.

It's complete B.S. The Buick is an engine the same as any other. There are some in the industry that would have you believe that only they have the magic touch to make your (insert brand name) run but in reality either you are an engine builder or you are not.

When we decided to do Engine Master's and Dr. Tom specified it had to be a Pontiac, I really started looking at what was available. What impressed me was that there were a lot of advantages to the Pontiac platform for this competition. There were some disadvantages too (mainly the pushrod location and the exhaust port design) but that is what we had to work with.

All I want you to do is remember that there isn't any "secret" camshaft or tricks that you can apply to a Pontiac that don't apply to other engine brands as well. If there is a vendor telling you that only their "secret" will make big power I would look elsewhere because it's marketing hype and not factual.

I will go one further. I recently rebuilt a 427 big block Chevy for a customer. I made NO CHANGES to the combination other than I put it together right. He has been racing his Chevelle for years and it's now .3 seconds and 4 mph faster than it's ever been. You can read about this engine on my Facebook page (Throttle's Performance) but my point is that some people understand what makes an engine tick and some don't.

Skip Fix 06-16-2014 10:46 AM

Got it a few days ago. Nice work. Amazing what thinking out of the box a little can do, and that can apply to us "regular guys".

This next year a couple of 409s are entered my other love besides Pontiacs.
