700R4 2-4 band servo?
Are solid teflon seals available for the 2-4 band servo on a 700r4? My kit came with scarf cut teflon seals.
|
Not that I have seen. The scarf cut are fine at that location, since the parts are "static", not spinning against each other like the turbine shaft. Scarf cut seals don't work nearly as well in that location, make sure to use solid teflon seals there.....Cliff

Thanks Cliff, I used solid teflon seals on the pump location, had to go to a shop that rebuilds transmissions to get the bigger ones that go on the pump itself. Just have to do the 2-4 servo adjustment for the band (part of the shift kit) and put the tail shaft on and it will be ready to go in my truck. This is my first 700R4 build.

They aren't so bad, solid teflons on the turbine and stator shafts are a must for those units.
The year of the transmission pretty much determines the amount of upgrades it will require to put a nice unit together. I NEVER use much from a pre-1987 unit, at least in terms of hard parts, sprags, drums, etc. They kept improving those units clear up thru the electronic versions, so upgrading to the latest stuff the factory used is always a good route to take.....IMHO.....Cliff |
Can I set the servo assembly up dry and without the seals to get the band adjustment set and then reassemble with seal and lube for final assembly?
|
Don't see why not. I'm assuming you are using a shift kit that may require shortening the pin just a bit. Been decades since I've done that deal, but I remember leaving something out of the servo assembly then checking the pin travel?.....Cliff

Thanks, this is a Transgo kit that has six washers. You remove washers until you can turn the tail shaft in both directions. There is a spring, washer and clip you leave out until it final assembly. I got it all together. Unfortunately this trans is from a 83 Caprice, it was given to me about 7 years ago by a friend who had it in his Chevy truck until it started slipping in second gear. Nothing was burnt, just frictions and band where worn. Put all new frictions, steels, rubber seals, bearings and a few bushings. Kind of a budget rebuild using a Transgo shift kit to help improve what I could. I did get a smaller 2-4 band servo but not the Corvette one. The build went really good and I borrowed a snap ring pliers and had a guy that rebuilt them before put the pistons in the multi clutch pack drum attached to the input shaft.
Thanks, Eric |
The 1983 unit will have a "soft" stator shaft, sun shell and pump rings. Also has the older design low and OD sprags. It also has the early style input shaft same size as the 200-4R from what I can remember?
We used to put the hardened sun shell in them, good pump rings, and hardened stator shaft and they would hold up pretty good for moderate high performance work. Mostly warmed over SBC's. Nothing I'd want behind a 455 Pontiac, at least not one that would ever see the dragstrip and good traction......Cliff |
This is going in my 81 Chevy C20 with a stock 350 and 4.10 gears. Thanks.
