68 Grille

I am replacing the grilles in my 68 with new aftermarket. I am unsure of the correct colors. A previous owner had repainted mine and I am sure it is not correct. I need to know which areas are argent silver and which are flat or satin black. A picture would be great.

I don't have a good closeup but I think you can tell from this photo what gets what color.
The inner grilles- Each individual horizontal fin gets argent. The outer perimeter gets argent right up to the polished stainless trim.
All vertical portions between the horizontal fins get black.
The outer edge OUTSIDE the polished stainless gets black.
On the headlight covers- Everything is black except the individual horizontal fins segments and a small 'wedge' right inside the stainless trim.
All of this gives the horizontal segments a 'floating' effect.
By the way, the bar connecting the 'G_T_O' is also black.

Greg nailed it. I used Krylon fusion Silver and semi-gloss black. Well crap, they took the paperclip thing away that I use to post pics. Sorry I don't have any pics on the web. Search my posts here and on the other GTO forum and you will find them.

A quick search yielded this photo of another member's hideaway grille from a shorter distance.

Nice shot of the grills/covers. Correct as Greg stated. Beautiful endura fit!

This picture, however, shows the incorrect treatment of the hood scoops - very common on repaints. The "inside" section of the scoop should be a flat black that looks "open" from a distance. These were NOT body color.

Greg Reid 10-07-2014 02:20 PM

Yeah Kurt, I noticed that too. Always screams REPAINT!
Nice car though. I don't remember who I stole the pic from.

Thanks guys. Very good info. I should have stated that my Goat has fixed headlights. Does that make any difference from what ya'll posted? Thanks, Mike

Greg Reid 10-07-2014 07:06 PM

Yeah, it does but I think only around the headlights themselves.

EDIT-I found GTO68FX's pic and it looks right to me...Interior grilles are the same as the hideaways and the headlight surrounds are black on the inner perimeters and at little triangular divot between each head lamp, top and bottom.

Hey thanks Greg, I can't post pics without that paper clip thing. My work computer has all those photo sharing websites blocked, which is 95% of the time I am on this site. Woo hoo, my scoops are black.

rememberfireball#22 10-08-2014 12:40 PM

Thanks to everbody for helping. Greg, that last picture you posted of the red/burgundy GTO is exactly what I needed. On the scoops, I opened mine up with a dremel tool and then attached fine black screen wire to the back side. Grilles are supposed to be here Fri and my GTO will finally be finished

I have two sets of scoops...One open and one closed. Couldn't pass the open ones up for $20 at a swap meet and had both sets painted along with the car.

A little slack please!! LOL The scoops have since been detailed; that was shortly after getting it on the road back in 08.

Hey Jimmy,

Glad you laughed. Of course I was not ripping on your car! I merely used your picture as a teachable moment. I'm glad to know you have it detailed as desired :)

I'd like to repaint mine - right now they are all black.

Anybody got a good method for painting the fins silver? It seems like an awful lot of masking tape would be needed...

Greg Reid 10-31-2014 10:36 AM

The grilles are not too bad but the headlight covers are a real challenge. I've tried to imagine how they did it at the factory. They MUST have had some type of template for masking them.
There's no easy way that I've come up with to do it at home. Just sit down in front of the TV with a roll of fineline tape and an x-acto or a small brush and a bottle of argent paint. They are worth the effort though. It really wakes up the front end appearance when done correctly.
