removing wiper arms
 

How can I get the wipers off without chipping the paint? I have one of those tools that looks like a can opener but it won't fit the arms. I've used screwdivers but that always chips the paint.

PY has a tool that will do the trick. The trick is to place the tool over the attaching end of the wiper arm and put the hook under the round end opposite from the arm. Squeeze the tool and wiper arm together and the arm should come free. No more chipping the cowl's paint. Works like a charm.

You might have to call PY as I can't remember the part number.

Sorry the photo of the tool is a bit fuzzy but you can see the hook on the end. Second photo is taking the arm off.

Lacking the sophistication of most, I have successfully used a claw hammer and a old T shirt. Probably pulled 50 sets of wipers that way. Most on junkers, but also on good cars.

Unless they are missing, each wiper arm has a little tab that has to be pulled back. If they have been off before those may be missing. Vice grips and shop rags work.(most of the time)

Same here. Pulled almost as many as Andre using a long screwdriver or whatever I could to get leverage and a thick T shirt or thick towel. Never chipped the paint, even on expensive show car paint jobs.

Done it lots of times with screwdrivers and rags but I always chip the paint.

Make sure you have a very good grip on the arm when it comes off the mounting post. The spring at the hinged point is very stiff and usually sends the arm careening all over the place if you aren't holding on to it tightly.

I used to use a screw driver, rag and a thin piece of wood to get mine off. Chipped more paint than I care to remember. Had to repaint my cowl panel because of it. This tool I now have cured that problem.



Jerry, I think Andre and I have a few years on ya.... as do a lot of others here on PY. You're just mid term in your membership in the Old Farts Club. When you reach 65 age, then you're a full fledged life member. ;) LOL

don't spend the $$$ on that tool.
be like us smart men.
buy a nice claw hammer, does most any thing.
you buy that other tool for only 1 thing.
The hammer will get those wiper arms off and pound them back on too.
The hammer can be used to build things,smash things,pull out old nails or new nails that you bent while hitting them with your new hammer,you could smash your hand too when you miss hitting that nail.
Also, you might even get a chance to learn how to install a new wind shield or meet new people when they come over to install that new wind shield.
The hammer can help to smash those holiday nutz that come to your house this time of year.

Just yesterday I missed the nail and busted by finger open,lol.

Found a universal wiper arm remover on ebay. "Bill"!

That e-bite Universal unit is the catz me-ow-ow-ow.

I've always just used my fingers. Press down on the arm side of the hub while pulling up on the opposite side of the hub, most pull right off. The trick is to remove the sideways tension the spring in the arm puts on the hub so it can be pulled straight up and off the transmission hub.

C4 or Semtex also work. Messy but they do remove the wiper blades and a few other unneeded things. And either one works far better than that claw hammer tool. ;)
