Fuel Sending Unit Replacement-Tank removal needed?
I searched but couldn't find a direct answer to this Q:
On my `64 LeMans, which started life as a 6 banger, can I replace the fuel sending unit without dropping the gas tank? (I'm upgrading to a RobbMc 1/2" setup.) Thanks, Adam |
Look to the front of the tank, the sending unit will be mounted with a lock ring. Unscrew the lock ring about a 1/4 turn and the whole assembly should pull right out.
If you have gas in the tank, you may have to jack the front end up to keep the gas towards the back of the tank to keep from pouring out. |
Thanks. Yes, I saw some decent videos on doing it, but not in the car. I can see there seems to be a lot of room in there before the pumpkin, but looks can be deceiving and I didn't want to get the old unit half way out only to realize I need to drop the tank.
Looks like I better go drive around an burn off a bunch of gas! I just filled (with 100 octane no less! ) |

Save your 100 octane gas for another day. Not a big issue to remove the lock ring and remove on a 64 A-Body. Car Ramps will help to keep the gas in the rear of the tank (after you move some to gas cans) and give you a lot more room to work safely under the car. Still use a Jackstand on each side of the frame behind the ramps (or under the front control arms). BE SAFE and DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST. Had a friend die when messing with a gas tank when a spark was created under the car. Tom V. |

I'm doing my reading and plan to upgrade to -8AN. Sheesh, this little Qjet upgrade is really snowballing! :jaw: |
DO NOT USE A DROP LIGHT OR ANY FORM OF 120V LIGHT!!!! Super dangerous. Remove as much of the gas as possible. I have also seen bad results, "Bill"!

so is a rechargeable battery operated LED light ok?
|
Much better.. Just get as much fuel out as possible. Fuel tanks have always been dangerous. Very dangerous. "Bill"!

Use a brass punch to loosen the ring .

If you can get the car up on a lift it'll be so much easier. It's no fun laying on the ground doing this tho it is doable.

Ya, I know. That's the main reason that I might let Richie do the full fuel line upgrade. Lift. And my garage is only one car wide.
