Fiberglass panels for making a custom shower
 

Does anybody know if you can get panels made for this? I started in with the Google Machine, but not sure if any of what I saw was suitable. I have a tub with no shower in a strangely configured little space that I want to add a shower head to & thought if I could put some FG panels in it would be better than painted surface and a whole lot easier than tiling a sloped ceiling. I have some tile from building a place I could use, and may end up tiling if this idea does not pan out but thought I would see if anyone had done this first.

Don't know if there are FG panels but I know there are "melamine" panels...kind of Masonite with a smooth waterproof outside coating.

You could put those up with adhesive and use the plastic molding stuff for the inside corners, seal with RTV silicone.

Those are the kind of ideas I am looking for.

Several years ago I bought a 5 piece kit for the same thing you are looking for. It is a pretty thin plastic that just installs with an adhesive. It has been in use for 14 years with no issues. Look at either Lowe's or Home Depot websites for bathtub surrounds. There are a few different 5 piece kits offered by both.

Can you cut portions of these? I would assume using a fiber blade you could cut (or burn) the pieces to fit the space. I have done that stinky job with other stuff.

Years ago we stuck a tub/shower under a roof line on the 2nd floor of a Cape house - we tiled it but I'm not sure how the curtain worked - it needed a custom cut glass panel. :rolleyes:

It was the customer's idea, not ours. ;)

These pieces are easily cut with a utility knife. I don't know if the stores keep them in stock. I found them on both stores websites this morning. Just checked again. See the link below for one of the 5 piece kit. They have others similar to it. This is the cheapest one they have at $67.

Yeah, I am my own goofy customer on this one. Mine would be exactly the reverse of that with the head coming out of the sloped ceiling. I know it is goofy, but I have fallen into the deal of a lifetime on a place, so it is worth a few 4:20 kind of things to take it to the next level. This place has a Japanese maple growing out of a built in planter on a balcony outside the bath window, so… already over the edge. That will be the first thing to go when I move in.

Thanks again for those Boss. I'm thinking of copying your barage design too. I have to add on to an existing w/ a 12/12 roof, so I think that will work, putting another Bldg on the back side.

years ago i bought a couple shower surrounds for appartments i owned. put them over bad tile. got them from local plumbing supply hous, not big box stores. they were still up when i sold the place after 16 yrs.

That planter is wild looking.....and likely an excellent source for leaks! ;)

I'm still planning a roof down the left side of the barn with a low (3 or 4 pitch) that will act like covered outside storage for the trailer & parts cars so it's still not done yet.

Time & money, all I need are time & money. ;)

Planter is not leaking but balcony next to it is. Drain device in bichothane (sp?) was never installed so open edges of material into PVC are wicking and dripping to porch ceiling below I believe.

I have additions on my current Bldg with exactly as you describe with 3' overhangs. It is my favorite place to work on cars. You can walk around the outside unobstructed. Even with a wide bay, this is a nice unanticipated feature.

Here is one of the whole crazy deal too. As a builder, you'll love it.

I'm planning another 10 years here and then looking to move to a smaller house with lower taxes.

10 years is actually my plan for this place too.

That's an easy one - I would just tile the walls & possibly the ceiling above, swap out the trim & extension jambs on the windows to AZEK or some other PVC composite trim and caulk it liberally. I would mount the shower head on the wall above the valve - not on the slope of the ceiling - if you can get to 6'-8" or even 7' you will be fine.

Great idea on the trim. That was another of my concerns. I don't see how I can avoid tiling whole mess either. Could not have picked a worse tub color unless it was avocado.

One weird end will be only issue with how to put glass or curtain in.

You can have the tub re-painted/colored/finished with a white enamel if it bothers you. Not sure what the raised area is on the left but if you can make that a full wall and tile the inside you have an easier solution on the door/curtain issue. If not, put a glass panel on top of it like we did in this house.

I’d probably tile it too. If for some reason you don’t want to tile it, you could do it with FRP ( fiberglass reinforced panels). It comes in 4x8 sheets and is easy to work with. Just another option.
