removing urethane from windows
 

I just finished removing all the glass from my 77 Grand Prix and the opera windows were barely held in(I pushed them out by hand), the urethane, if it was urethane, was very sticky and not hardened at all. Does anyone know a good product for cleaning them so I can get them ready for reinstallation? Also there were what appeared to be plastic clips that I found near the bottom of the window well that were broken. They don't look like they clip into anything, they look more like spacers. Were these just for setting the window? Do I need them? Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

The sealer on your opera windows was butyl tape, not urethane. Clean with a razor blade and solvent such as thinner, reducer, etc.
And yes, those were probably spacers that you found. They keep the glass from sliding downward due to its own weight when the sealer and glass get hot.
I've seen glass that slid over time because of no spacers being used.

Use glass cleaner or water and a razor blade in a holder if you have one. Solvent will make a smeary mess . To get off the body they sell some plastic sticks at Harbor Freight that will help scrape it off the body without gouging the paint all up. When putting in you really should use a butly primmer on the body and just have the glass clean.

3M adhesive remover will safely get it loose also. Better to use on a painted surface than thinner, but thinner will clean it from glass.

Try using a piece of the buytl tape to remove the old butyl. It worked for me many times when I worked in a GM dealer. Then clean the glass with paint thinner or a solvent.:)
