66 lower front of rear quarter
 

I am working on a 66 Tempest and the lower rear quarter between the door and rear wheelwell on the passenger side was apparently hit at some point, crudely pounded or pulled out and filled with bondo. I don't think it can be repaired by metal finishing, at least me amateur me, and would like to replace the metal. I can't find patch panels for these but there are quarter skins with this piece on it. Am I stuck buying of these skins? I know they fit poorly according to what I have read and text in the catalogs.

Yes you will either need to purchase a full 1/4 skin and cut it down,
or buy a section off a good parts donor.

Find yourself a donor car to get that from. I would talk to the body man doing the work if he can fix what's there or will need to replace it. The quarter panel skins are awful at best and the contour in that area will need a LOT of work to get it close.

It's me doing the bodywork, learning as I go. This is the first car I have worked on to this level, actually trying metal finishing and welding in patch panels. I am not looking for perfection, just trying to minimize the amount of filler needed.

It is a good location, as you can get in behind to push it out. (once you remove the inner panel)

If the metal is solid, you may be better off to try and salvage what is there, and that may be easier/quicker than welding in a patch.

Weld pins to it and pull it out if the metal is salvageable. That will save you a lot of time and money.... and some head knocking too. Check with a body shop friend and they'll show you what I mean. I can't think if the name of it, but I can see it in what's left of my mind. LOL we used one of them in the body shop all the time. Saved on taking things apart that didn't really need to be pulled apart.

I have some 1/4 skin of unknown origin that were poorly installed on a project I'm working on, there may be enough of what you are looking for, I am in Rockford Mi if you would like to come over and look, I do know where there is a 67 that may also have what you need 10 miles up the road.

I didn't know the inner panel came off, is it easy? I am working by myself so no help. I will get a pic and post next week (if I can figure that out). It isn't one big dent, it is a lot of little dents like they tried to beat it out before and did a poor job and then slapped on a bunch of filler.

I thought about those pins, but i would have to buy the machine that welds them on. Would they work decent on a bunch of little dents?

Gt182: the tool is called a stud welder.....check out a H&S autoshot to see what it is/does.
