69 rear bumper repair
 

Has anyone ever tried to bang out dents in the rear bumper? I have two fairly small dents and was wondering if I should try to bang them out myself or not. I would think I might have luck if I used a dead blow hammer or hard rubber mallet. Any thoughts?

I would think it would be hard to do.

I'm sure it can be done.... by someone with lots of experience. It is more likely that if I tried it, the bumper would end up looking worse. If you had a junk bumper to practice on first, then maybe...

Do not try to straighten a bumper with a hammer. The proper tool for this is
a hydraulic ram fixture, which all businesses that repair and rechrome bumpers have. Even
with the right tools it can be hard for the bumper shop to tell if the bumper will fit to the
car properly when it is reinstalled. What I did on my bumper is have the bumper shop tweak
my bumper a little, then I took it home and tried it on the car. After three tries it fit perfect, then I had them chrome it.

Big difference between fixing dents in a bumper and straightening a tweeked bumper. Fixing dints is not that big if deal but you will have to use real hammers, not dead blow.
