1969 gto with ac heater core removal question
 

I have a 1969 gto with air. The heater core is leaking.There are 4 bolts that hold the heater/ac box from inside the car through the firewall with nuts on them. I have the nuts removed from the studs , 2 closest to the motor and the top one near the fender and the box is loose in the car. Do I have to remove the plastic fender well to get the fourth nut of as I can't see it from the top or underneath the car.Any help would be appreciated.

Yes , All of them has to come out, The inter fender well, or fender The fender well is metal, Right. You will get more replys today, Good luck And welcome to APY.

It will be easier to get it out by removing the fender well & take the back of the fender loose so you can reach in behind the fender to help get it out. You have a little bit of work in front of you but go slow take a few pics & don't get to frustrated while your doing it. Also welcome to the site.

In 1973 my heater core went out on my car for the first time, and I took a chisel and used it to cut off the bottom right hand corner stud from the rest of the box from inside the car. When i got done I put a little caulk on the corner and you can't even tell this was done. It's been that way for 42 years and hasn't fallen off the firewall yet.....Don't waste
your time pulling fenderwells over one stupid nut... I changed the core again a few years ago just because it was getting old and I didn't want to have problems....I enjoyed that
corner stud being cut off the box once again!

Thanks for the info. I want to do it correct but taking apart the fender is a lot of work for 1 bolt. At least I have options. Thank you to all that responded.
