Vent window frame alignment
 

Having trouble aligning new cast vent window frame from hitting windshield frame on a convert. Noticed the new weatherstrip fuzzy goes past vent frame between frame and door top molding. ( on outside). Anyone know if window weatherstrip should be cut so vent frame is against molding without fuzzy in between.

I'm fairly sure that the fuzzie should stop at the vent window frame

Where is the vent frame hitting the windshield post?

It is touching at the top, enough to keep door from closing. I've been adjusting the lower screw, but it seemed like I was pulling in too far on the bottom and there would not be enough movement to get the top out.

Make sure the washer, bolt and screw in the front of the frame are loose before you adjust the bottom in. I'm doing the same thing right now and that's the only way I could get much adjustment.

Chuck, thanks. I went to do the other side, and it adjusted out out fine. The window fuzzie was between the vent frame and outer door molding and it worked and looked correct. Not loosening the front bolt and stud/ nut enough may have been the problem. I'll give it another try tonight.

The problem was not the window fuzzie. It appears that it should extend in front of the vertical vent window frame to the vent window rubber weather strip.

It was a combination of things
1.) the new SS molding across the door ( beltline?) tilted in past the door edge preventing the new front cast vent window frame from tilting out ward. Some careful adjustment of the lip that clips over the door with screw holes moved away the interference between the door and frame.
2.) the new cast vent frame is thicker than the original in the area of the bend where the 1/4" dia threaded hole is for the upper bolt. It was about .060" thicker than original on one side, plus there was was excess casting flash. This prevented the lower leg of the frame from tilting in, so the upper frame could not tilt out to clear the windshield pillar. I ground down the casting flash to gain some clearance.
3.) lubricating the lower vent window weatherstrip so it slides into the door also made it simpler to adjust.
I think each item contributed just enough so that the door could not close due to vent frame hitting windshield frame at top. I'lll post some pictures later. The cast vent window frames fit nice otherwise. Only had this problem on the passenger side.

Btw, this is for 67 GTO, not a 68. Did not want to confuse anyone with the cars in my signature line.

Funny that we are both using new vent window front frames and both of us had problems with only the passenger side. The chrome trim with the weather stripping on the windshield frame also can be adjusted side to side. Got mine adjusted pretty well now but might have to readjust some once the convertible top is installed.

Chuck, I have not permanently mounted the windshield pillar / weatherstripping yet. When you say adjustable, are you saying before you glue in the weatherstrip? Though the weatherstrip can be temporarily placed in the SS holder, I'm assuming it glues in, which then means you can't get to the screws any longer to adjust. Just want to be sure I know every bit of adjustment I can get.

My top shop wants the windows aligned with the top frame and weatherstrip before they install the top. I'm also thinking of not permanently installing the windshield weatherstrip though until top is done. Only have one night or two left to get it done before it gets a top.

Yes those holes in the windshield chrome trim are fairly wide so there is some good adjustment there. I have not glued the weatherstripping in and won't until I get the new top installed. Putting it in without glueing works pretty well and it doesn't move around. We are about at the same place in putting our cars back together. Just did the splatter paint in the trunk and installed the headlight hardware. I had an appointment to get the top installed on the 29th but called and postponed to a later date because rushing to get the car ready for top install was becoming too much like a job rather than a hobby. I've been at this car since 2009, so I guess an extra month isn't going to hurt anything.

I traveled Rt 105 so many times with Anchor Mrt Frt's carhauler I can still see Newport and Lake Memphremagag. Is the Chevy dealer still out there on the east side of I-91 on 105/5?

Hopefully, no snow till November this year. The Chevy dealer is gone. In 2009 when Chevy was having all their problems they gave the dealer a choice to be just a Chevy dealership and get rid of Jeep/Chrysler and the idiots chose to drop Chevy. So our nearest Chevy dealer is 40 miles away in Morrisville or in St Johnsbury. And I always thought that only Canadians in way overweight trucks travelled on 105 and that's why they have to repave it every 2 years. This is a beautiful area, just sucks to live here in the winter.

On my first trip to deliver in Newport I asked for directions from a cop and he sent me out 105. Went that way many many times.

Back in the 80s they had a 1950 RHD, standard tranny, Bentley in the showroom for sale. I almost bought it but 18,000 was a bit too much. Besides, it needed paint work on the right rear so I passed on it. Light grey body with darker grey fenders. They wouldn't do the paint work.

Chuck, got the passenger side adjusted as well as the quarter windows last night. Came together pretty well with the windows just getting inside the lip of the top weatherstrip. I could probably still fine tune the tip in of the windows a bit more, but overall, looks good and ready to get the top. Going to start a separate thread to see if there are any final tips on any convertible top adjustments. One more night left!

Would you mind posting a few pictures of the work you are doing on the quarter window weatherstripping? I am replacing that weatherstripping with new rubber and removed the SS holder on the side of the windshield frame to clean it up, as well as remove all the old weatherstripping from the brackets that hold the tip of the weatherstripping. It seems that the new weatherstripping will need to be streached a few inches to be able to insert the pin at the bottom. Would be nice to see pictures of the steps on how it is installed if you happen to have any. Good thread, thanks for posting!!

Charles, I'm afraid I didn't take any pictures of that, but it was one of the easier things I've done on this car. Not sure if I bought those weather strips online or from Ames where I got most of my stuff. But they were the right size and had the steel inserts. I mounted them before the windows went back in. I sprayed both the window and the weather strip with a mix of dish soap and water. They slid right in. On the very bottom I used a small flat tip screwdriver to work the strip into the bottom of the chrome. I have not used any adhesive yet, but could inject some under the weatherstrip later if needed.
