Front Disc D52 fit on rear?
I converted my rear years ago with a disc setup from a 80 or 81 Trans am. My dilemma is i have either had to replace the rear calipers no less than 6 times due to leakage or due to the calipers freezing up and wanting the car to make a right turn when hitting the brakes. The e- brake is a pain to adjust and if not adjusted right, there is no brake pedal. The originals are long gone so no rebuilding there.
Never ever have used the E- brake so no loss if I do not re-install. Ironically the front calipers are over 20 years old and work perfect. Just wanted to know if the standard D52 front calipers will fit and work on the rear . What about brake lines? Thanks in advance |
No, different size.

The reason your rear bakes freeze up is that your not using your E-brake. To keep the rears from freezing up you have to use your E-brake to keep them lubed. The slides get dirty & then freeze up from not using the E-brake. So your causing the problem yourself by not using the E-brake.

The "metric" D154 calipers will work but no E brake. I think about '79 ish Malibus. I am usign them on the 79 Camaro drag car project.

I forgot to say that I used the 79 Toronado rear calipers on my other car & they worked ok & had an E-brake set up to use & was easy to put on & hook up the E-brake , just needed a longer mid cable.

I am totally happy with my Blazer setup. It has 11.6" rotors and better stopping power than my original rear disks. It is also a lot lighter and the E brake will hold in any anywhere.

Yes you can run the D52 calipers on the rear of your car. You will need the bracket for the conversion. Places like Left Hander Chassis will have them. You will need to make new brake lines and use a disc/disc master cylinder and an adjustable proportioning valve. Back in my street stock circle track racing days this was a very popular rear brake swap because it worked well and was cheap.

Thanks to all, I need to check my receipt as I think I have the lifetime warranty on the calipers I currently have. It will give me a chance to try them and the metric D154's. If those fail or just not working well reliably, I guess I will play around with some SSBC or Wilwood and just be done with it.

Yes if using TA or Caddy rear ratchet calipers a lifetime warranty is worth it! ratchets will be an issue if you keep the car for a long time.
D154s are a bolt on. As SMW said the circle track guys do have brackets-generally weld on. I have a used late Model chassis that they had to use those on all 4 corners per class rules. Wilwood had an old GM aluminum caliper and Howe had a dual piston one before Wilwood came out with the new D52 twin piston ones. They are more rigid that the Howe or early Wilwoods. |
