stock FS 1966 rim?

Folks,

I have a 1966 Bonneville Conv, early vin with 14" tires/rims. I am trying to determine the backspace on the rim. I took the rim/tire off the car. Took the valve stem out, no air in tire. I have a bar that will lay across the rim lip and not touch the rubber tire. The distance from the bottom of the bar to the mounting surface of the rim is 4.25". There is the letter "H" stamped near the valve stem. I have been told the stock Pontiac 14x6 rim has a backspace of 3.75" so I am hesitant to order 16x7 8 lug rims from BOP until I get a handle on this backspace thing.

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like you are measuring correctly. Here's a photo to help confirm:

Yea, that is the same way I measured. Looks like I may have 7" wide rims. Anyone care to comment?

I am a bonehead.

I was measuring the back space on an "H" code steel stock 5 lug wheel. Which is and should be different then the back space on a stock 8 lug wheel. Duh. Got that sorted.

1965-1966 full size stock steel rim.
5 lug = 4.25" bs
8 lug = 3.75" bs
