71 Interior Paint
 

I have all interior panels for a 71 bird that need a facelift including dash.
Any recomendations for interior paint? Original Dark Blue
Ames lists the interior paint but only available in spray cans was hoping for something in a 2 part mix to spray as have found that to be more robust, any guidance would be appreciated.

I've used SEM Color Coat successfully.....but plastic can be fussier to paint than metal.....

Any 2 part paint has a "glue" effect ( aside from a basecoat) and will "eat" some of the plastic.

First Use a product like DX330 ( clean strip makes a cheaper one, paint pre prep) Do NOT use a soapy water based product in a plastic bottle at autozone)
Then use a "Adhesion promoter" ( I use bulldog brand by kleen strip) Follow directions, you only let it sit for a few MINUTES before your color.
Then apply your "made for plastic" SEM coatings AS the DIRECTIONS say. You cannot lay on huge wet coats.

Concur with what the others said, do exactly what the SEM instructions say.

Color changes -- like black over light-colored plastic panels -- can be very hard to do. Even the SEM stuff chips easily, though not as bad as the cheap auto-store coatings. I'm actually thinking of experimenting with black epoxy primer on some plastic pieces to see if I can get a more durable finish atop that. (I'll start out with an old/broken piece, that way if it dissolves the grain or something it'll be okay.)

I have used ppg epoxy primers on plastic interior panels with great success. It is really good as a base if changing colors

I should have mentioned that I use a base coat paint with hardener as a top coat if I can get a good color match. No clear just base coat with a hardner. the sheen is just about right. the base coat is more durable than spray cans although I do like the sem rattle can paints.

L70J -- are the base coat and hardener SEM products? And have you tied this both on plastic (sail panels, etc.) and vinyl parts?

I used ppg base coat. I have used it on plastic not vinyl. Ken

10% hardener is how you want to mix base coat. Mix your basecoat as instructed, PPG is 1:1 then add no more than 10% hardener, also, you have to use a particular hardener, ask the paint store which one.
