Green tinted glass
 

I am starting to replace the windows in my 1962 Grand Prix and noticed that a number of companies sell green tinted glass, has anyone used this, and does the color throw off the color of the body or does it lighten up in the daylight. I remember seeing the tinted windshields when I was a boy, but not the side glass.

Back then you could get just a tinted windshield, or full tinted glass on all windows. i prefer all tinted (it's better on sunny days) but I suppose the look will depend on the color of your car.

Do you have PHS on your GP? If not, pry it open and buy it. It is WORTH IT.

Besides laying all doubt to rest as how your DarkSider was born, you can find out useful stuff like whether the car has tinted glass and how much tinted glass.

They offer green tinted glass but most of the factory glass was a little on the blue side.I prefer the green myself but results and opinions vary.

Since we are on the topic. I've been looking at a bunch of cars here hoping to find one. I've noticed that all the a/c cars had tinted glass and all the ones that do not have it has clear. Was this standard on a/c cars and optional on non a/c?

Typically, yes - although if I had to guess, I'd say the majority of non-a/c cars I've come across had tinted glass as well. It was a pretty common option; unfortunately, the Bonneville I own now does not have tinted glass.

The '63 Grand Prix I had didn't have tinted glass and it was an a/c car.

That is a first! Do you have PHS on this car? I would almost guess that the glass was replaced by a prior owner.

No, I didn't get any PHS for it. I know the windshield was replaced, it was almost new when I bought the car.
If some previous owner replaced all the other glass I don't know, but if someone did it must've been a long time ago
because the glass that was on it looked like it has been there for decades. The chrome around the side glass was bad too

From what I remember full tinted glass was highly recommended with A/C but not a Mandatory option. So I would assume some A/C cars were Build with Clear Glass.

The Tinted glass was not part of the A/C option in the 60's.

My '62 Catalina did not come with A/C but does have tinted glass.Thanks to a hyper bodymans lack of care while doing some media blasting I have to replace the side glass on both sides. Yikes!!!

Aye. I know it's anecdotal, but all of the twelve Circ-L-Aire '62s I have owned were full-tint.

Besides my Pontiac I have a '66 Ford F-100 pickup. The restoration shop ended up paying for a new windshield and rear window, after one of their minions managed to hit both of them with a D/A sander.

The deal was, as I recall, the very dark tinted band at the TOP of the windshield was standard on A/C equipped cars and optional on non A/C cars. The much lighter tinted glass was optional all around. Either 'windshield only' or 'all'.
Definitely worth getting on most colors in my opinion. With black cars and some cars with black interiors it doesn't make much difference but most cars really benefit from the tint in my opinion.

My glass guy calls that the "shade", so windshields could be described as:
- tinted / shaded
- nontinted / shaded
- nontinted / nonshaded ("water clear" on da whole ting)


This pertains to tint. Side and rear glass never got the shade.

(Most of us know this but I'm clarifying that in thinking about future searches by the as-yet-uninitiated DarkSider.) ;)

Thanks for clarifying that Matt. My terminology is not correct but my main point was trying to clarify the A/C vs. Tinted glass thing. A/C was connected to the 'shade' and not necessarily the 'tint'... if I am correct in my recollection about this.
It's something I researched some time ago when I had a '74 Trans Am with no tint, no shade and no A/C.
