Securing a Pop Up Camper from Theft
 

Just wondering what you pop up camper guys use to prevent theft. I have heard of a few methods and wanted to get your comments as to what is the best method?

Is there a wheel boot that can be used?
Removing a wheel?
Using a padlock to lock the hitch so it can't be opened?
I have seen these ball locks that fit in the hitch and lock in place with a large U bolt?
Running a cable through both rims and padlock the ends to the trailer frame t?
Carry insurance that's a given.

What do you think?

All of those are good, some more than others. I've secured a 20' enclosed job trailer with the ball lock style that goes in the hitch with the large u-bolt. It's been broken into, but never stolen.

Others I know have blocked their trailers & removed wheels if they plan on keeping it in the same spot for a while.

I chained my car trailer to a tree.

The ball joint lock is good and depending on value you may use a gps tracker hidden in the RV. I have a motion sensor alarm inside so when the door goes up it wakes or alerts me and the AR15 insurance policy is activated. Big dogs and big guns solve a lot of problems with security on my property. Chaining it up is a good idea also, just depends on what you perceive the threat level to be.

I always used a trailer hitch lock.

I think I will get the Fastway Universal Trailer Coupler Lock for 1-7/8", 2" and 2-5/16" Couplers DT25013 for my pop up camper.

I was thinking about using a cable threaded through the wheel slots and trailer frame with padlock. Does any one know if bolt cutters will cut a cable? For that matter a hack saw or cut off wheel will go through most any thing. The cable is probably not such a good idea.

I had that fastway coupler lock and a cable between the tires on my 18ft car trailer and it still got stolen out of a storage lot. Thieves are thieves. If they want it and have time they'll get anything or make a mess trying. I should have removed the wheels and left it on cinder blocks. I wonder if their is a way to lock down the tounge jack.

As with everything, like Hitman said, if they really want to steal it, none of the above will matter. They will have things to cut locks, chairs, or cables. They will have fabricated fixtures to haul off a trailer without the ball hitch. Dollies to put under booted wheels. Whatever. It's really about stopping the 98% of the thefts that are 'opportunities' that unscrupulous people look for.

I think the above mentioned hitch locks and cables will be effective and are reasonable. If you want more security, it's down to the GPS tracking type things.
