future value- 85Riv or 90 GT Con.
 

Got a choice between a 85 Buick Riv, 14k miles, moonroof , leather, fully loaded and truly, and I mean truly mint , special order Dark grey, with red leather, original tires at 16500, or a 1990 GT mustang, all options red with black leather, original unmodified 9000 mile auto car at 20000. Truly torn about which one to buy.Both are close to 1 cars, top to bottom. Where does this forum think future short term values are going to be greater? Riv is beautiful, console, t type wheels, even though its not a T type, 307 motor, Mustang Gt is truly mint, original tire car with no and I mean no modifications. Both cars have all paperwork. and come with original two owner history. thanks guys. My Pontiac dreams are gonna have to be sastisfied with my 2000 ram air conv until the right local car comes around.

Just my opinion- The Riv will never be worth anything. A very limited market for them. Doesn't do anything particularly well.

The 1990 Mustang might be a nice car but there were a ton of them. Basically just a nice used car. If you "save" it for another 20 years it may be worth something.

Both of them seem way overpriced for what they are.

Both cars would probably be contenders for Best of show at national shows., but you make some very good points. cant help but think that the popularity of the Gt follows the 77-79 TA curve however.

I can't speak to the current value of either car, but the Mustang has a devoted following. I know people who practically worship the 80s-early 90s 5.0 Mustang. I can't say that I know anyone who loves Buick Rivieras (from that era anyway, the 60s ones were cool). So my thought is that the Mustang will go up in value MUCH faster than the Buick (plus it's a much bigger market), and I think in a few more years, there will be quite a few people who would look at a 9,000 mile original car just like we look at the low mileage survivor GTOs.

The Mustangs large following makes it the best choice for future resale value. Personally I would not have one, I have owned a couple of really nice Rivieras in that body style. Great rides, but that is it, there is not much can be done with them other than drive them.

The Mustang has a market. No one wants the Buick, even if it is supposedly a "show winner" quality.

I'm 39 and Mustang GT was the hot car when I was in high school. Of course, I wanted a real muscle car (GTO) but when people my age really start wanting to re-live their 'glory days', they'll be looking to pick up a sweet GT 5.0. I don't think you'll lose anything on the Mustang, even if you drive it a little bit. The only 80s Buick that's going to hold its value/potentially appreciate will be one of the Turbos. Just my $0.02.

I'm not sure - for $20K, you can buy a car that's collectible NOW - rather than one you'll hope will be collectible in the future.

The Mustang by far. Huge aftermarket for them will insure that the values will always be there. I've had four and have made money on all of them. They are really fun to drive too. My neighbor has one of those Buicks, loves the thing but I don't see a future collectible in it.

Cousin owns a Mazda dealership, here in Cleveland , Just told me mustang all the way. he'll put it in his new car showroom in a year at 24900. H e'll finance, it, give a little warrenty even. He didn't even want to hear about the Buick. Thanks for all the input! All good stuff! Forgot to say Mustang is a conv. Seller of the Riv and Mustang just sold a 10000 mile 75 Grand Prix, buckets, 400 motor, red,. Car went to San Fran, at 22500. told me the buyer loves it , even at that price.

You guys would be surprised at what some of the low mile 3rd gen's are going for these days....very surprised. The 9000 mile GT is over priced at 20k but low to mid teens is not unrealistic if it's in perfect condition.

Don't give up on your quest for a 68-69 A body! Neither of those cars are worth the money in my opinion.

What exactly is your goal? Tying $20k up in an already overpriced car and planning to sell it for $25k would likely be a break-even proposition at best if you include taxes/fees, storage, cutting in the dealer, getting talked down from the $25k you think you'll get after it sits forever, opportunity cost, etc.

If making a decent profit is your goal, you are going about it ALL wrong, IMO. OTOH, if risking $20k on a very dubious short term investment is your goal, you're on the right track.

id pass on both unless you love one...and you dont..you are speculating...big gamble..

mustang will always be hot..but 20k is prob top...even if it is perfect blah blah blah...

for 20k you could buy a nice pontiac of some type..if youre in this to invest and make money in the future..you arent even in the right market..you need another 20k to buy a really hot car..you are in the middle..where the rest of us car slobs are..and its highly competitive

youd make more money by discovering good resto projects..bringing them forward and flipping them,..in 4 or 5 cars youd be in a better spot..just be picky..like GTO instead of lemans...SS instead of plain etc..those cars are popping up everywhere...and a guy could do good if he had a plan and stuck to it

id rather hav 4 to 6k in a project, creaming all the good stuff, and new stuff that comes with it, and make a couple grand on the flip, then sell the creamed stuff...its a double tap..

buying a 20k car and only making 4 of 5k and holding on to it for years to do that..seems risky..for a perfect car to stay perfect you cant drive it..you can only cover it up and show it off...what a waste of a car..

buy what ya love..dont look sideways..buy what you love..and if you make money later, good for you

i used to buy 6-7500k cars that where 10-15 year old restos..right to the point they could use a freshening..drive them for a year and flip them for either what i paid or a couple grand more...the best part was i got to enjoy it for a year or so...

Id hunt all fall and winter...drive it all summer and fall and sell the next spring at tax time...id still do it if my job wasnt so involved..best time of my "car life" always had a hot rod..always had a bunch of money...id try to buy 3 or 4 a year and sell 3 or 4 the next..was a lot of good times

perfect cars suck..PERIOD....dont get me wrong..i love them..but theres no gratification by being a museum care taker..give me a little rough around the edges car and i'll show you how to torture it til its tongue hangs out and what fun really is.....just sayin'
