How to identify GM 68 Hood
 

Hello, I need help on what are the tell tail signs a 68 hood is original and not a reman. Where is the date code stamped if there is one or some other features that will help me decide. I am looking at buying a hood and don't want a crappy one.

I think they are usually stamped somewhere along the outside vertical edge on the left or right of the hood. Going to be hard to find most likely. I'd love to see a picture of one if anyone has one.

or the bow/ kink from tight hinges & tight owners.

Is offset which is unique to a 68 hood

Along driver's side edge of hood. Original 68. I believe is says 629B1

Also, as mentioned, the 68 does not have an indent on the center brace coming from the nose toward the scoops - that was 69-70 to clear the newer fan shroud design.

Has anyone ever posted a code breakdown for pontiac sheet metal on this forum?

Although from what I've gathered from other makes, GM/Fisher didn't typically stamp the years, only a month/day code and a plant code. ... so if I was going to guess .... 6 (June) 29th, B .. Baltimore? .. 1 run number/ line number?

Just guesses though.

I believe your date code decode is correct. Data plate of same car shows 07B, but Plant is pontiac. will post later.

Complete, original, 1-owner car. 3-spd, posi. All there, but I had too many projects to consider at the time AND this car was SO rusty from sitting so long with salt on it that it was disintegrating. Endura was completely eaten from the inside metal structure outward - was dust underneath. Hood looked decent from outside, but underneath was crumbling. Interior was nice. Mechanicals would surely have been salvageable, but I had no time/place for another.

HOWEVER, it did offer me a chance to document this thing from top-to-bottom, inside and out. Great reference pictures with date codes etc. :)

I would then change my guess to 6 (june) 29th, B (line code), 1 (run number)

Just went back and looked at all the info on my gto .... plant of origin - Arlington (as per VIN).... body assembled in Baltimore (as per body plate).

Is that typical? But I guess the body date is from the Fisher body plant, and the VIN origin was where body and frame met?

The hoods are the one good repro part made for the 68.. from what I have heard very little mods to make it perfect..
