Does anyone know any options other than REM for console or dash walnut vinyl inserts? I'm redoing the console on my 67 GTO 4 speed and i can't believe all that's out there is what Ames or Parts Place is selling. Both are low quality IMO. Years ago i bought a thicker vinyl from Performance Restorations (Daryl Roach?) and it still looks great today. Unfortunately PR is no longer in business.

For a console even buying a sheet or roll of thicker vinyl would work since its easy enough to use the metal backing as a template - but where to find decent vinyl??

Have you tried looking at some formica sheets at any hardware store that sell counter tops. They will usually have about 100+ samples & they are thick enough to use as an insert for your cousole. You only have to buy the amount they have as std. sellable stock. In other words you may have to buy a sheet of 4X4 to get a small piece to use.

Have you thought of hydrograhics?

That's an idea. I have bought plywood as thin as 1/64" at Hobby Shops that sell model airplane building supplies.

I bought a roll (burl vinyl) direct from REM back in 2002 (before the repro kits were available). I was going to use it to turn my standard '69 Bird dash into a woodgrain dash, but scrapped the plan when I found an original woodgrain dash. I just took another look at the roll to check on the quality of the material. It's slightly better than contact paper, but not much. The overall color match is pretty good to my original woodgrain dash and console. The downside is that it lacks the tiny "pores", and the "burl" pattern is different than the one on my dash and console. My roll is 14 years old so maybe REM has something better now. It might be worth contacting REM directly. I'm not sure why my pics show upside down in these forums, sorry about that.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I wound up contacting REM and was able to purchase the woodgrain vinyl off their roll larger than needed. So I cut it about an inch larger and after applying to the metal backing I had it in direct sun on and off for about a week where it "shrank" another 1/16"+ all around. Easy enough to then trim with a blade along the edge of the backing. It looks great - we'll see how well it looks come end of summer!

The REM wood grain I purchased from Ames for my 69 bird looked fine but the fit was terrible, holes were cut way off and overall it was way short in spots. I now have to remove it and go another route

Great looking car. Thanks for sharing. By the way, I had that same tag on the front of my '68 GTO back in the early '80s. Couldn't find one for sale back then so I got a black plate, reversed it and painted my own. My wife hated it so much that she would routinely remove it while I was asleep.
Fast forward 20 years and my son, who had heard the story from me at least 100 times, bought me a miniature Jolly Roger flag for my Trans Am. I never put it on but I still have it as a memento....

Great story on the jolly roger. I actually put it on as kind of a joke when I got my car road worthy before the body was done. But for some reason it kinda agitated a couple guys here at work so of course I've kept it on ever since.

I restored my 68 FB console using a real wood Walnut Burlwood veneer. I used a form of vacuum bagging and epoxy to get the veneer wood to form to the console. In the post below I post some pics and where I bought supplies and how I did it.

Its a lot of work and maybe too much work but adds a pretty cool authentic wood look.
