Well, since I didn't go to the Jefferson Swap Meet this weekend, let's see if you can guess what I did do. The un-fun part was having to post in this section.
Pictured is a Pontiac air cleaner. Can anyone tell me the year and application? Breather hole edge is 15" from the edge of the snorkel.

1974 ?

TA455HO 04-23-2016 10:39 PM

I'm seeing a date code on the Wittek tower clamp of 1/72. If that's correct it has to be a 72 year. Too late for 71 and too early for 73.

.

I think the Wittek clamp is a decoy. I am really just learning these cars, but I don't think a single snorkle air cleaner like that with provisions for the left fender air intake duct was available until '73. The flapper pin orientation matches Mike's rule of thumb for 1974, so that is my guess.

That one looks like the one I have hanging on my wall & it's a 73 , the original one off my 73 GTO. The end would point towards the left fender & have the fuzzy hose going to a feed under the battery box.

Really Bob, look at your air cleaner and the pictures again.

What kind of '73?

marxjunk 04-24-2016 01:01 PM

With a drain hole in the bottom it's shaker or someone made it up

Where else you going see a mudded '72 GTO (white w/green guts, column shift) with a '69 WW block sell for over $20K (taxes and buyers fee). Did you know someone that was there other than me?

poncho-mike 04-24-2016 05:17 PM

I'm pretty sure that is a Firebird air cleaner. If you look at how deep the surface is the air cleaner sits on relative to where the carb sits, you will see there is a big drop down. That is typical of 1970 and up Firebirds.

The type of snorkel is made to duct over to the core support, so it would be a 73 and up.

I'm guessing it is a Formula Firebird base or possibly a Trans am air cleaner base.

I didn't see a drain hole, but I saw the carb vent that Pontiac Q-Jets used starting in 1971.

First picture Mike.

Transamric 04-25-2016 03:30 PM

Is the clamp date 1/72 or 11/72? I think I am seeing a faint 11 before the hash mark.

Transamric 04-25-2016 03:52 PM

Ok, I'll chime in with, it's a '73 Trans Am L75 base that Bob really needs to replace his '74 base??

Held for Ransom 04-25-2016 04:22 PM

It's a 1/72.

Bentwheelbob 04-25-2016 04:58 PM

Automatic transmission TA built prior to 3/15/73.

If I get it right can I have the white stripe vacuum hose? I understand I need one and would prefer one with a little patina.

necdb3 04-25-2016 06:08 PM

The TCS is 73
