Best way to ship tires?

Hey all
Bought 4 tires from board member and was shocked to see a UPS store wanted $44 per tire to ship.
I know those UPS stores charge above and beyond the actual shipping charges but that $176 to ship 4 tires was ridiculous.
I know Smallhurst sells new tires and was hoping he or someone else could chime in to give some advice on the best (and least expensive) way to ship?
I could have them sent to a commercial address if that helps.
Thanks

When I bought 4 Redlines from Summit they simply taped two tires together so I received 2 packages.

Check w/FedEx, they will give about a 10% discount if you open a shipping account.

I shipped a set of 4 tires a couple years ago. Cost was about $94 to ship all 4 from So Cal to Oklahoma. Sent them in 2 packages, each pair of tires taped together and wrapped in cardboard. They were well-preserved 45-year old tires and I didn't want to just tape them together.

Some shippers charge extra if they're not packaged in cardboard (had that issue with UPS once) so be sure to check.

Used my FedEx account, they picked them up at my home. Pickup is about $3 extra, well-worth it for something large or heavy.

Try Greyhound bus. My father in law shipped tires this way a few times.

Where are they - you never know who may be traveling through an area if you can wait.
