Towing a 63 automatic
 

Can you remove the rear axles to tow a 63 lemans automatic with a car dolly. Thanks Jim

How about putting the dolly under the rear, hook a bungie on the steering wheel and tow it backward?

Car can be towed backwards on a dolly but top speed is 25-35 mph. Cant tow with rear wheels on the ground. Cant pull axles, nothing for tires to bolt to if axles are out. Full trailer is about the only way,, or a roll off tow truck.

A U-haul auto transport should be the same price as a car dolly. Tell them you are restoring an old car and hauling an a-body roller frame to sand blasters?

One word of caution, used a ratchet tie down when immobilizing the steering wheel, not a bungee cord. I usually tie it down to the seat tracks and loop it around at least 2 steering wheel spokes, it needs to be tight so that the wheels can't move at all. Even if you have a car with a locking steering column tie the steering wheel off too. They have been known to jump the ratcheting mechanism and end up with the wheels cocked and locked in that position taking up more than one lane.

I've towed my 76 T/A many many miles on a tow dolly at 60+ MPH. The type of dolly is important though. A turntable dolly will tow fine backwards as it doesn't use the cars steering to keep the towed vehicle from binding on corners. With a straight axle dolly I wouldn't attempt towing it backwards at all. There needs to be a pivot point between the tow dolly and the towed vehicle.

If your going to rent a turntable tow dolly from U haul, make no mention of towing it backwards, because they won't rent it to you.
