Who fixes AM radios?
 

Would like to get my AM radio restored on my 66 GTO. It does work and I can get one station. Would like to get it totally working.

Have you tried the antenna adjust screw behind the RH knob? That can make a big difference. Also spray some contact cleaner carefully done both shafts with the knobs and bezels off. It will dry quickly, then some light oil done both shafts.

Interested myself, it does not look like a cheap date.

Those old car Radios have over 100 Capacitors inside of them, soldered to the circuit board. The ones they used to make are rolled with sheets of aluminum foil and mylar in-between. They they are dipped in a wax-like substance. When those get old they start to change value and often they fail. When one goes bad it usually leads to a domino effect which takes out several others. The only real cure for that is to replace all of them at once. New caps are made in a different way, and they last a lot longer.

I sent my original 66 GTO AM radio to http://www.wardsclassiccarradiorepair.com/

They basically converted it into a modern AM/FM. Looks externally like original AM, but internally is modern electronics with both bands. Pushbuttons are functional as well.

What did that set you back $$ wise if you don't mind sharing.

I was just looking around the other day trying to find someone to restore or maybe mildly upgrade the stock am unit but sheesh! those prices are steep.

I may have to just stick it in the dash in non-working condition and put something modern in the glove box.


Anyone have a lead on a "working" stock am radio?
