1969 Grand Prix Model J

5 Attachment(s)
Unrestored with 54,000 original miles. Original Cameo Ivory paint and black vinyl top. Interior is all original and in very good condition with the exception of a warped package tray and small hole in the headliner. Strong running, numbers matching 400 and auto transmission. 3.23 non-posi rear. Fairly loaded for a base Model J with 16 factory options including power windows, power vacuum locks, power driver's seat, reclining passenger seat, AM/FM stereo radio, original Space Saver Spare, power steering, cordova top, Rally II wheels with original caps, rings, black center lugs, tinted glass, AC, door edge guards. All the power options work but the AC will need to be updated. I am technically the third owner but the family I bought it from in 2009 had owned it since 1970. It has always been garaged but has rust through in rear corner of both fenders, bottom of drivers door, and rear quarters behind wheel wells. There may also be some rust developing at the bottom of the rear window under the top. I rebuilt the brakes, had the original radiator redone with a new core, replaced the exhaust manifolds with reconditioned correct originals, new fuel pump, carburetor rebuilt by Tom Wilhite with a Cliff Ruggles kit, new battery, rebuilt wiper motor and new whitewall radials. I have the original Protect-O-Plate, PHS, and ownership history. I also have a service book showing that the oil was replaced every 1500 miles! This car is a real time capsule and I regret having to sell it, but I need to focus on finishing the restoration of my 69 GTO. It is a solid and reliable driver and a great 20-footer. I would like to see it go to a good home. I am happy to email additional pictures and answer any questions. My asking price is $9500 or best realistic offer.

I should have mentioned that the floor and trunk pans are rust free, the body is straight with no evidence that it has ever been in an accident, and the trim and glass are excellent.

You might have to have a Flickr account to see my pictures. I have had this happen before and I don't know to fix it. If you PM your email, I can send you some pictures.

Some more info...It has the born with XH code 400 with 62 heads. All the recent mechanical work was done by John at Midwest Mechanical Specialties. He was recommended by members of this forum and did excellent work IMHO. It had the original transmission filter still on it when fluid was changed. I've got all the original parts that were not able to be reused. The car has spent it's whole life in the KC area and the 2 previous owners are available to contact. Owner 1 had the car 1969-70 and Owner 2 (family) had the car 1970-2009.

Run on pump gas?

Does it ping in the summer on pump gas? With those #62 heads the compression would be pretty high (unless it has dished pistons). I've had bad experiences with 62 heads and pump gas on these 400s.

vacuum door locks? not electric?

Red69Goat 06-16-2016 08:53 PM

I've never noticed any pinging with this GP but remember it on my GTO with the same heads back in the early 90's. I always run at least 91 octane in the GP and don't drive it everyday. I believe the true compression with the 62 heads is 9.5-10:1 or less than the advertised 10.5:1. I think the 62 heads are around 75cc or at least that's what I've read on this site. I might notice pinging if I drove it more on hot days. I believe my GTO pinged back in the day because I couldn't buy at least 91 octane in our small town.

Yes, they were vacuum in 69 and then electric in 70 I believe.

Red69Goat 06-16-2016 08:57 PM

I usually throw in a bottle of octane booster but I don't think that makes much of a difference. I've been using the highest zinc content oil that I can find.

Also open to trade on parts for my 69 GTO restoration.

Yes, ;68 was the lst year for vacuum door locks. they went to electric in '70 although it is not unheard of to have a late production unit car (June/July '69) be quipped with electric locks if they were out of the vacuum unit parts. They were required to keep a percentage of parts for replacement so the inventory might have been exhausted on the assembly line for late model units that were ordered with the option.

I'm going to drop my price slightly to $9000 OBO. I know there are cheaper cars out there, but this one's a keeper. It breaks my heart to have to sell it, but I can't justify the storage fees in the city and I need to get the 69 GTO finished. If it doesn't sell this week, I may look at storing it in my hometown 5 hours away. Please take a look at my Flickr page and Craigslist ad for better pictures. It is a bit of a challenge to upload them here.

Price reduced to $8000 and that is pretty much my bottom line guys, otherwise I might as well hang on to it!
