Few 68 firebird questions

Hi everyone. I'm new to your forum. I purchased the 68 400 from forum member Bet Winner. It is a great car and I'm happy to have it..

I'm looking into a couple of small issues I need a little help with.

#1 the blower motor will not run on high speed. other speeds are OK. It is a factory air car if that makes any difference. I purchased a wiring diagram for a '68 but is not much help.

Where can I buy an accurate wiring manual ????

The gas gauge does not work. It reads far right way past full. I shorted the tan wire in the trunk to ground and it read empty (far left). So I know the gauge and wiring going forward are OK

Do I just drop the gas tank and remove the float assembly and go from there???

I need to replace the valve cover gaskets but the right side looks a little difficult on an air car.

I'm sure I have more questions but those are on my mind now.

Thanks and you will probably be seeing me on here quite a bit.

Thanks, Larry

The high blow relay is probably no good or it could be the blower resistor to. The gas gauge may just have a broken wire to the ground side at the gas tank. Check the ground wire under the car that goes from the gas tank unit to the body of the car. You'll have to be under the car looking up at the back of the tank which is at the center of the car. The ground wire can break off or even rust off. You'll have a black wire that should be screwed to the body from the back of the tank. If not that will need to be put back on the body to make ground. The tank doesn't need to be removed for this.

Thank you. I will check the relay today if I can find it. I will make sure the tank has a good ground.

I have a 69 lemans w/air and had same issues. Look for a 30 amp fuse going to back of alternator, if blown or missing high speed blower will not work. When you have fuel tank pulled down, also check the gas gauge sending wire. This wire was tan colored on my car. It gets corroded and loses good contact, and the gauge will read full. By just getting my hand up there and snugging up wire I was able to get gauge working again. For the valve cover, you will have to remove the bracket going from the ac compressor to the intake. Like I said, my car is a '69 lemans, not sure if the same. I hope this helps.

I checked the high blow relay today and it is good. When I select High speed it energizes the relay and puts 12 volts to heavy black wire with an orange stripe. It appears to go thru the firewall and then where I don't know.

On the fuel gauge I grounded the tank, no help. I pulled and wiggled the tan wire going to the sending unit and no change. Guess the tank is coming down.

Grizzle, When the car cools down I'm going out to look for the wire you mentioned on the back of the alternator.

I tried pulling and wiggling the tan wir e going to the sending unit and did not help.
So it looks like the tank is coming down. Looks to be real easy.

Thanks for your help, Larry

OK grizzle, looks like you are all over it. I checked the inline fuse you mentioned and sure enough the fuse holder was damaged and not making contact. I will renew it tomorrow but it sure looks like you are spot on.

Thanks for your help. you saved me a lot of time.

Was hoping the gas gauge issue was an easy fix like mine was. Just wanted you to check the simple stuff first. I found out the hard way before there were forums like this.
