'68 firebird 400 idle stop soleniod ?????
 

What controls this unit. If I look on page 12-11 of the service manual it shows it runs to pin "E" of the firewall connector. Then if I go to page 12-14 it shows the other side (interior) of the connector. There wire "E" runs to I don't know what.

What the heck is that drawing half way down the left side of page 12-14. ?????

Your idle stop wire should be in the harness & come out right by the carb on the right side of the engine . It will have a plastic cover on the single wire that plugs onto the stop. It comes out of the harness or it may be tucked in & you will have to cut open the harness & pull it out. Sometimes they are taped in the harness folded over. You'll find it there.

The wire was hooked to the solenoid.. Tested the unit with 12V and it energizes fine. It was adjusted in so it did nothing energized or not.

With the ignition on it energizes. Now my questions are:

1. When does it deenergize ???

2. What is it used for ???

3.Was it only on AIR cars ??

As I remember it was only on air cars. When the AC came on as the car sat at low idle it energized and the plunger popped out to increase the rpm's so the engine wouldn't stall.

They were on all manual and autos v8's. They were used to control the dieseling that are prone to carbs running at higher rpms or ones that run leaner. They are anti- dieseling devices. When you turn the car off it deenergizes the solenoid dropping the rpms lower.

I stand corrected, almost the opposite of what I thought.
