Honda Accord help, please
 

I have my late father-in-laws' '92 Honda Accord LX 4cyl. 150K miles, but still pretty good old car.

Runs fine most of the time, but yesterday while driving down the road I noticed it missing a little then the check engine lite came on and stayed on. Turned around and got it home, missing all the way, about 6 miles. Turned it off and found nothing obviously wrong under the hood. Couple minutes later I hit the key it started right up, no CEL and ran like a top. It acted the same way a couple days earlier in a friends drive way. Shut it off, started up and ran fine the rest of the day.

Can any of you Honda guys give me a lead where to start looking. I can work on the older 60's cars but technology has passed me by!!! Maybe a sensor or something??? Car has mostly been pretty trouble free so almost everything under the hood is original. I remember putting a new distributor in it for him yrs a go, but not much else that I recall.

Check the code the next time the check engine light comes on - it'll tell you what's wrong. Unless it's lying: My V6 Acura was acting funny, and the code said it was a "bad throttle body." After replacing it three times, I consulted an Acura forum and learned it was a bad "app sensor." (Throttle position sensor.) Fixed that, and the problem disappeared.

Most parts stores will scan it and pull the codes for free, they may also give you a print out with a list of the code(s). If you want to try and pull them yourself this method may work

Takes a few minutes to figure out the code, use to do this before I bought a code scanner.

OK, thanks, guys............I thought since OBD11 didn't start until '96 model year that there would not be a code stored in a '92, but will start there when it happens again.

thanks, johnnygoose....this will be a huge help. I have a a cheaper scan tool and will plug this in and see what's what. This is the first time I've seen a list of codes for OBD1 in fact I didn't know OBD1 existed, but makes sense since we have OBD11 now, duh!
