PUI vs. Legendary ?
 

I am planing on putting new seat covers on my 68 GTO. I would like some feedback on the quality form people who have used PUI and or Legendary interiors. Fit and or any issues.

I think the quality has dropped lately also.

I used PUI, no complaints from me.

I just got my Ivy Gold seat covers last week for my 68 Lemans HO from PUI...took about 5 weeks to get. I got color samples from Ames a few months back, and the PUI looks closer to the original than the Legendary...and thats why I ordered them. I don't have them installed yet, but I took em out of the box, and they sure look pretty. I guess I would say if you have gold, blue, red interior...I would get samples first, they are free.

Years ago, PUI was made here in the states. Quality was good. Years ago they moved most or all there work to Mexico and since then many people have complained about quality, some shops will not attempt to install PUI as they are sometimes to small. Legendary for the most part is known for better fit and quality of the reproduction but cost more. There was a good discussion about it a few months back somewhere here, do a search and see what other people think.

PUI is an entry level interior...and is fine for most people..


PUI is very flat looking in the car..you can tell a PUI interior from across the street in the car..

legendary is the best you can get right now...i personally can tell the diff..but legendary is pretty close to OEM most of the time..nothing is like GM though..

I have PUI in mine. They've held up ok for the last 15 years, but when time and money permits Legendary is going in. Like Mark said, there's a noticeable difference. PUI covers are much more flat than the originals or Legendary.

It appears to me the lines that are pressed into the vinyl on the PUI covers are not as deep or defined as originals or as deep as the Legendary covers. I'm going with Legendary. I wish I could afford to have SMS make mine. They are as near NOS as you can get.

Exactly, based on my experience anyway. I can spot a PUI interior at a show easily. Looks ok but the pleats look 'deflated'. Kind of like a one-dimensional photo of a seat cover.

Waited 5 weeks for my Firebird interior parts from PUI. They sent Camaro door panels. Waited another 3 weeks for the correct ones. Installer complained of stitching not straight and blue marks on the product from the manufacturing process.
I would go Legendary next time.

I restored my dad's interior in his 68 GTO Conv 2 winters ago. He used all Legendary stuff and it was great. It was my first time doing any interior work and their customer service was great and the fit and finish was excellent. He had one defect on his passenger seat and after a year of waiting for the wrinkle to flatten out they finally just sent us a new seat back cover no questions asked. Their stuff is correct and they will replace what isn't right. When it comes time for interior in my 68 they will get my business.

Main upholstery dealer in my area wont sell PUI products anymore. They had so many complaints, especially with the seat buns, that they wont sell it anymore. They were sick of dealing with returns, shipping back and forth and unhappy customers.

I've heard only good things with Legendary, but many complaints about PUI lately. I did 2 cars with Legendary (both 72 LeMans/GTO), and one car with PUI (69 Bird). I would do the Bird over with Legendary if money wasnt a concern.

Legendary is hands down better. No contest.

Another vote for Legendary. Just completed 68 convertible interior pieces: buckets and rear seat, door panels and ashwell covers. No issues with vinyl fit and finish and the color, pearl parchment, is pretty much spot-on to the original.

The pictures in the first post of the following thread comparing PUI and Legendary 66 GTO seat covers really shows the difference in the definition of the pleats.

A BIG Thank you to all that have responded. I have used Legendary on 3 cars in the past 7 years. The most recent, still in progress, had a small issue that they are in the process of taking care of. I have never used PUI, and was wondering if I should give them a try.
Sounds like I will stick with Legendary.

I wonder if people are seeing Distinctive Industries brand sold at "Original parts group"...which is super flat, and thinking it is PUI?

no..PUI has been around forever..its never been right..its always been entry level low cost...and always been too flat...ive used the stuff for decades until there was a better option..ive installed so much i cant remember the numbers..it alway fit well, but lacks detail and is always easy to spot

its decent just not authentic looking...for years there was no real option..so many cars got it..now..people are swapping it out for the legendary stuff..on high end stuff forthe simple fact it look more authentic and similar to OEM

id put it in a driver mid level resto...and i have, many many of my cars got the stuff and i installed a bunch...theres cars its fine in..and its good stuff...ive got some in a 70 SS Nova i did in the late 90s and i drove it a bunch...and it still fits and looks new..no wear...

i just wouldnt use it in my 69 Ram IV car that i plan a frame off as good as i can make it resto...
