Exhaust recommendations please 66 lemans
 

hi there, have bought a 66 lemans and the exhaust system needs replacing, it's running a 400 Pontiac engine, I will be mostly highway cruising at about 65 mph, engine is running stock manifolds, I would like a nice sound not too loud but not a church mouse either! Was hoping to spend around the $500 mark there are so many to choose from? Any help would be appreciated.....oh and I want the pipe to go over the diff and out the back cheers

Pypes Kit w/Race Pros or Super Turbos or UltraFlos. These all have a low rumble, the Race Pros are a little louder when you get on it in my opinion. The Pypes Street Pros a little louder yet. I have a set of those for sale (sorry, shameless plug)

I used the pypes front pipes & an X-pipe along with the muffler I found by looking at A LOT of them. I went with the new Thrush Turbo flow mufflers & am really glad I did as they work GREAT. They are a little bit loud when you hit the gas & sound really great when at idle. But the best part is there is no drone & when going down the street at speed it is a nice mellow sound, again until you hit the gas again. They are only about $ 40.00 a piece to. These are the typical oblong muffler that are center / side outlet, that are a 16" body which is very close to the original size in our cars. I don't run tail pipes but the stock style will bolt right up . I used the 2 1/2 size muffler & pipes.

You might consider a local custom exhaust shop. It's not mandrel bent, but you're using logs. Also, I don't know the division line where you'll loose hp with crimp bent, but the majority of Pontiacs will not loose hp with a 2.5” crimped-bent systems. I have always wondered why overpriced systems don't show dyno resluts.

After a number of years of massive research on x-pipes, I went with the h-pipe. I'm not getting into a technical discussion about it, just saying what I choose.

Mine cost $300, I supplied the mufflers, and my exhaust guy said: any quieter, and it would start to plug the engine. It's a tad louder than I care for. Ultimately, I would like to hear induction only, no exhaust sound, but you cannot have everything. Just before I absolutely shredded a super, loudass 9 with ra clone engine, I watched his buddy lean toward my car, and lip “Sounds like a pussy.” So it's good enough for me because it's getting the job done.

Instead of using the supplied reducers, the guy makes his own, claiming they're dyno-documented to outflow any reducer on the market.

Two people, one who owns a Lemans, the other a 9, both had PYPES, and the systems looked like brass balls dragging on the ground, so both owners took their cars to my man for a refit.
