Rate the PONTIAC INTAKES?!?

How do they all compare (low height models for 2nd gen Fbody hood clearence) in as cast form and/or with simple port match on a 400 engine?

>Stock 1970 typical 4 BBl cast iron
>Torker I
>TorkerII
>Hurricane
>Holley Streetmaster
>Performer
>455 HO repro
>76+ EGR 4 bbl
>anything I left out

Thanks!

Depends on the combo and what you want out of it. 068-ish cam, stock converter, taller rear gears, a stock intake is going to work best.

Bigger cam, converter, gears, one of the single plane choices would probably be best, probably TII or the Street Dominator/Hurricane (they're the same thing). I'm assuming you meant Street Dominator when you typed "Streetmaster" as I've never heard of that intake.

An early cast iron intake and the 455HO repro will perform about the same. Even the '73+ EGR intakes work pretty darned well.

There's just no one way to rank these intakes as how well they work really depends on other factors.

Edelbrock made a Streetmaster intake for SBC's back in the 70's. A single plane with very small runners. Have seen a few at swap meets recently, I wonder how they performed....
Never seen or heard of one for a Pontiac.

Yeah, that list has some apples, oranges and peaches on it, no way to compare them all on one specific type of engine. Jim Hand tested many of them on his wagon, though!

The Hurricane/Tomahawk intake is about the same height as a old Holley Street Dominator intake. And about the same height as a factory iron intake.

Had a T-1 on my 78 T/A. The hood scoop fit but sat kind of low and closer to the windshield. Plus it was a pig on my 462. Changed to a stock early 70's intake that was ported by Dave at SD performance. Totally different engine and scoop fits the way it should. If I was racing "maybe" the T-1 would be a better option but it was hands down the wrong intake for my car, the engine and my driving style on the street.

T1s sucked on anything less than 440 to 455 CID with at least 3.23 gears and 3400 lbs or less!

Fixed the list.
More likely engine details.
400

Likely Combo:
2nd Gen Formula @ 3900#,very limited use hot street car.
~220-230cfm #48 heads,11.3:1
60919 cam Rhoads VMAX Lifters,
RARE 2.25" manifolds
BM ST10- 2.43 1st gear,4.10 rear

FUEL INDUCTION
>either 76 QJET,
>one of the new EFI systems(meanstreet FITECH) ,
>Spread or Square DP Holley
Likely on E85, or 93 pump fuel, or 93 blended with 110 TBD.

Removed T1 as an option.

STEELCITYFIREBIRD 12-07-2016 11:34 AM

So I have a factory 70 factory cast, factory 76 EGR, Performer RPM (not an option too tall),and can have a T2, old Street Dominator or new Hurricane I can buy relatively cheap.

What makes one more suited to certain applications than others?
Not looking to do the SD port, just a gasket match myself.

PunchT37 12-07-2016 11:35 AM

Up to around 500hp or so, I would run a ported factory intake with a properly tuned q-jet.

Gotta keep the shaker shakin.:)

Guess you got a shaker? No?

On the `70 vs `76, factory, I would run the one that matches the choke setup of the q-jet.

What pistons are you running? 11.3 compress on a flattop 400 seems kinda high. Even with 48 heads.

STEELCITYFIREBIRD 12-07-2016 12:09 PM

No shaker, one year '76 Formula hood.
Ported stock not in budget/timeline...for now.
L2262F30, zero deck, 64 or 66cc chambers,I don't recall off hand what I got when I cc'ed them, ~.040 gasket.
Electric choke conversion on any of the carbs used.

This does not read like a street car.
With a 4.10gear, you will spent allot of time getting out of your own way.
While your going thru first and second gear, a modern mustang will be long gone. JMO.

STEELCITYFIREBIRD 12-07-2016 12:50 PM

I know it is a row boat with the ST10's 1st gear, I'm up to the task for now, a close ratio M20 may replace the ST10 when it is ready or possibly an OD unit. It will go 8 miles from home, max, and on windy back roads at that. The 4.10's are here to stay.... I like deep gears.
My other car has a 428 2-4's and 4.56's in it.

Keep in mind if one was to compare a optimized factory intake as Dave Bisschop does vs a Tomahawk out of the box. The Tomahawk particularly the front runners are all different sizes and need a fair amount of grinding using some snap gauges to get them close to even in size. Also the Tomahawk port openings as cast are small. How much work will depend on the performance level and the cylinder head port size in use. And if hood clearance will allow the addition of carb spacers help performance.

Yeah, many of those intakes don't have enough meat to properly seal on aftermarket 310+ cfm heads, and need a bead welded to the tops of the runners. It's work. So the application is a consideration.

Steve C. 12-07-2016 02:10 PM

At a approximate 2.300" port height the Tomahawk has about 0.125" at the top to seal. Similar with a HSD intake.

STEELCITYFIREBIRD 12-07-2016 02:14 PM

The heads are port matched to a std Fel Pro blue gasket, and nothing more is planned.
Another intake I forgot that I can get is a P4B Edelbrock.

So with a spread bore which intake?
With a square bore Holley?
With FITECH Meanstreet?

And which carb is better choice for what I have below and behind.

The only work I want to do to the intake is port match to std port gasket.
Thanks for all input!

...the streets are tough and short where I live! :3gears:

I don't plan to be the king of the hill, just a good quick car.

PunchT37 12-07-2016 09:22 PM

I would go factory for the spread bore and T2 for square bore or FI.

What rods do you run? Rpm`s are gonna matter with the T2. I`d like to see 6200 to 6500 rpm capability with the 400 and single plane manifold.
