Is the KIA Stinger the next RWD Muscle Car sedan ?
 

Given GM has abandoned the rear wheel drive sports sedan platform after this year's final Chevy SS, looks like foreign manufacturers are bringing new products to the very same market that GM thought wouldn't sell. Take a look at the specs and it also comes AWD. This should make quite a competitor to the Audi, BMW, Lexus, Taurus SHO

Power will come from two engines, with the range-topping 365-hp turbo 3.3-liter V-6 making that version the most powerful roadgoing Kia yet; a 255-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder will serve as the entry-level engine. The Stinger gets an eight-speed automatic transmission, with buyers able to choose between rear- and all-wheel drive. Kia says it is targeting a 5.1-second zero-to-62-mph time and a 167-mph top speed for the 3.3-liter.

GM still has the ATS-V (464 HP) and the CTS-V (640 HP) in the RWD sports sedan market.

They make the Kia Stinger look rather anemic...;)

I just bought an ATS-4 (AWD) with the 2.0 liter turbo - 275 HP and 295 torque that is quite the car. Same chassis as the new Camaro, Brembo brakes, etc...

True and they are both great cars. They are do however target a different market segment.

Top end Stinger ( I'm no Kia fan BTW ) priced at ~ $52k. Who would have thought Kia brings a car with HUD and Brembo brakes. I don't EVER see myself buying a KIA, but interesting they are making the investment to move into this segment.

In my travels working around the world, I have had exposure to cars from these manufacturers that compete with Mercedes, BMW and even the Camaro. I believe that they sent their low end vehicles over here thinking that a mid to high end consumer would not consider their offerings. I looks like that is changing. Still, I'm not sure that I would be an early adopter with this one.

I agree that the ATS-V and the CTS-V are way above the Stinger in both performance and price.

But I didn't know that the Stinger was $52,000.00!!! That's crazy...

My ATS-4 Premium model comes with the 2.0 liter turbo is in the same price bracket ($50,000 sticker).

The ATS-4 has more HP and torque, HUD, Brembo brakes, Performance suspension with Magnetic Ride Control, AWD, sunroof, navigation and much more as standard equipment.

For 2017, the Premium model no longer exists and has been replaced by the Premium Performance model. It has a 335 HP V6 and most of the other goodies that mine has, but not the AWD. Sticker is $47,990.

I think that makes it a direct competitor or the Stinger.

As someone else who would never own a Korean car, I think it's great they are building and trying to sell them. It keeps constant pressure on the domestic manufacturers and forces them to upgrade and compete. Competition is always good. I work on Hyundai's and Kia's on a regular basis. They remind be very much of all the Chinese stuff I deal with. They are basically a facsimile of what the car is supposed to be. They want to be a Honda or a Toyota, and they even look like them from a distance. But they aren't even in the same universe as far as the quality of each and every part and the finished product doesn't drive anything like the car they are trying to imitate. The last car my father owned before he died was a Hyundai Azera. It was a 30K car and was supposed to be in the same class as a Mercedes C class or 5 series BMW. It even tested better than them. After 3 years and 25K miles, it was a complete rattle trap, terrible ride, suspension noise, many of the zillions of electronic features had failed. Horrible dealer and warranty service. A complete disappointment for his final car. I was 3000 miles away and couldn't offer much help. If that car cost 52K new, I would wait 5 years and it can probably be bought for 20% of new.

Havn't but Think i would. South Korea good. Like a 53 state only better.

Just MY opinion.

I know I'm in the minority's here, but I like my '13 Optima SX turbo. It's been a really solid car and a good value for the money. It's also reasonably fun to drive for what it is. The 2.0 4 banger in it has 20 more hp than the base version of the Stinger but I'd consider the V6 version.

Just wait and see I guess. I'm not expecting anything impressive though.

Last I heard, Hyundai still owns 46% of Kia and I expect it to go down much like the Genisis - Offering a turbo 4 would make one think that It's a light and nimble car, but sporting a 111" wheel base is like asking a linebacker to run hurdles.

Most of them are that way right now; just massive. It's ok if you can't do go anywhere with out creature comforts, but when you want agile and economic - the automakers are still deaf and dumb. Still trying to pull every penny from a sale by selling large and mandatory equipment. They may be singing to the middle aged/muscle crowd, but the guys wanting a coup on a diet are still forced to wait or buy old.

I have a Kia Soul as a daily - it's a terrible car. I can't wait till summer where I can drive to work in my Datsun. Only good thing about my Kia, is that I don't really car about the winter time salting. Most of the time I want a better DD, but for what's out there at what cost - no sale. Maybe 11-12 v6 mustang if I can find a manual, but think I'm gonna buy a bigger lathe and take a couple of classes instead.

It would only take 1 YEAR to loose 32% of the sticker$

I have a Hyundai Veloster Turbo as my daily driver and its great on gas and when I need to the turbo kicks in and pulls hard

quality is so so, but definitely better than the interior on my 97 WS6 haha

For the price of the Kia you could buy a NEW GT350 mustang with the flat plane crank 8500 rpm v8! LOL
