Rule of thumb
 

Hi everyone. Is there a rule of thumb to go by for the transmission yoke on an automatic transmission, to be sticking out of the transmission?? A friend brought by some Pontiac driveshaft's that he had stored away, and I tried one. I could barely get the rear universal bolted in. The trans. yoke is almost up against, touching the transmission, but not quite. This is with the car suspended on the lift.. Once on the ground, that distance will increase about 3/4"-1". At least that was my past experience. Thank you, Carmine.

I thought it would be the opposite. With the car on the ground the yoke would be even further into the trans. Maybe I am wrong. :)

This is what I would think as well. If you have the right driveshaft, you should be able to tell where the past seal road on the yoke to gauge it off of.

I would have thought the same thing. Unless I measured wrong, on the ground increased the length out of the trans. by 3/4"-1". I'm going to put it on the ground and measure again tomorrow. I certainly know where it is in the air, so I'll be able to see the difference when I let it down. Will report back, Carmine.

The yoke has some superficial rust spots on it. Nothing of consequence. I really didn't look at it closely, but I will. Thanks, Carmine.
